Convert DVR-MS files to MPEG, WMA, and WMV formats.
DVRMSToolbox is a set of tools to perform actions on DVR-MS files. Create scheduled tasks that process your recorded TV while you sleep, or if you are a more visual person a there is also a GUI that will run the applications. A set of "Profiles", or configured set of actions, is included in the installation package. These include convert DVR-MS to MPEG, DVR-MS to MPEG w/o commercials, DVR-MS to WMA, and DVR-MS to WMV, cut commercials out of a DVR-MS file and output DVR-MS and out of DVR-MS, output DVR-MS and DVR-MS with commercials. The "Profiles" are flexible, you can change the actions in the included profiles, or create your own using the DVRMSToolboxSettings application
Wouldn't install stating I needed .Net Framework 1.1. I installed the latest version and tried again. It still states I need .Net Framework 1.1. I would really love to try this software but I can't.
Excellent conversion

Pros
It was easy to use. I downloaded the basic instructions which work perfectly.
Cons
It is not a masterpiece. It is very intuitive so one really does not need a help screen or a lot of instructions. Since that is the worse thing, I love it.
Summary
It is free! Not many of us can afford to buy software as we experiment, so thank you very much! It is easy to use. The output file works great. If I need to purchase a conversion software later, I know where to come.
I can not install

Version 1.2.1.1 needed for Vista. Converts DVR-MS to MPEG, but...
JZweighaft
Pros
You need version 1.2.1.1 for Vista. For now you'll have to find it elsewhere on the web. There is little obvious help but software types should be able to handle it. Version 1.2.1.1 would fail to convert with the default selections in the GUI, BUT selecting the profile, "DVR-MS to MPEG with Ffmpeg" works correctly, at least on two files that I tried. Commercial cutting is known not to work in this version. There are a lot of features I haven't tried.
Cons
Version 1.0.9.5 does not install in Vista. Version 1.2.1.1 does but was not available from this site when this was written. Had to obtain from a source unknown to me, always a security risk. Help requires some digging and understanding. Not for neophytes. Commercial cutting does not work and fails the conversion in the GUI. Commercial cutting is on in the default Gui as installed so that you need to change some settings to make it work.

Pros
I use different programs for video editing. The only one that could read my Recorded TV (DVR-MS) is "My DVD - by Sonic". However, I needed to use part of Recorded TV to edit in my regular video editing programs. This is a good solution.
Cons

Can't figure out how to work it

Amazing Fast DVR-MS Conversion

Pros
This is a very good piece of freeware. A ten minute DVR-MS clip converted in just a few seconds to MPEG, which is supported by a lot more software than DVR-MS. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with Media Center 2005.
Cons
However, the compression for MPEG isn't very good (only about 20mb difference) but might be better for others such as WMV. Also, you have to enter the full file name (e.g. D:\Recorded TV\blah.dvr-ms)
