Pros
Very compatible with Word documents. Once you get used to the layout of the tool bars you have a very good word processing substitute. Students can download it and not worry about their budget.
Cons
Nothing major to complain about.

Pros
Looks very user friendly and easy to create a file with Text program.
Imported a photo easily.
Cons
Will not install on Mac OS 10.9.1
Can't open Pages 3.0 files on Mac OS 10.5.8 even though I tried a file converter. The converter would not recognize my file.
It is no use to me if I can't use Mac Iworks or MS Office files.
Apache documentation is no help for my problems.

Pros
Allows saving under multiple formats on the Mac
Cons
no major negatives.
Summary
when I switched to the Mac from windows I had planned on using Apples own spreadsheet and wordprocessing apps. Being a Libre Office user I thought that I could merely save the spreadsheet as a word document on the Mac but alas, there was no option. A friend suggested Open Office and said that it would allow the saving into multiple formats. Thanks to Open Office I didn't need to export the files to a windows PC and save as Excel format and then send back to the Mac.

Pros
Clean and intuitive interface. Can accomplish all everyday tasks without problems. Not bloated and .... it works! I had no problems on either Win 7 Ultimate on an HP Pavilion or on Mac OSX
Cons
I couldn't see any.
Summary
Highly recommended as a general purpose home /school / office application - rarely would the average user need anything more. Great value and worthy of support.

Pros
I am using Open Office instead of Microsoft Office. I was fed up with most bloated Microsoft products. Open Office seems to be more flexible and intuitive than MS Office. I am extremely pleased with this software. Great to be able to open and save documents in so many formats.
Cons
I liked the drag and drop option in MS Office for inserting pictures. Placing pictures in an OO app is more long winded. I've had trouble opening (particularly re-opening) some documents by clicking on the document icon. Opens fine from file/open but is slow or seems to get stuck if opened from the document icon.

Pros
I've used OpenOffice when I was in college to help get my papers/essays done at least those that were lengthy or complicated. I loved all the features that matched Microsoft. The programs that ran on my university computers mostly used Microsoft office and dream weaver. Since I couldn't afford to buy MS Office, I was very happy to have found OpenOffice. I was very much a nuby with this kind of word program, and I never did quite get the hang of everything. However, it didn't crash or stall as often as some of the others that I was using at the time also.
Cons
Getting the tool bar buttons out and used is quite complicated. They don't seem to be that clear as to what they represent. It's very slow opening at least on my G4 iBook.
Summary
This is a very powerful word program. Although it's good for everyday use, I think it's more for professional people/office workers. It's packed with everything under the sun just about. It takes a very long time to learn how to navigate around w/this application. It was helpful and very useful for me while I was in college as I often times had to write lengthy papers as an education major. I had many drafts and rewrites. As a grad student, part of my education was to be able to use and navigate around the internet and use the computer in an efficient manner. I'm glad that OpenOffice allowed me to "practice" using things that I don't normally use everyday like inserting links or anchors, placing frames or place holders, using tables etc. For an application that rivals MS Word and it's free, I say, it's well worth getting to know how and how to use this application.
