Able RAWer

Editors' Review

by   / September 03, 2009

Able RAWer is, ostensibly, a program that allows users to edit raw images and export them in a nonproprietary file type. Unfortunately, Able RAWer is way more trouble than it's worth.

The interface is a disaster. It's completely unintuitive, a characteristic that is aggravated by the program's lack of a Help file. It took us way longer than necessary to figure out how to use the program, especially given the fact that its features are quite basic. Editing is done in a separate window that does not allow users to view the entire image at full size, making it impossible for users to see how their edits will affect the entire image. The program does not allow users to easily undo edits or, more importantly, compare the edited image to the original raw file. Most of the program's features consist of the photo-editing basics, such as controls for brightness, contrast, hue, and so on. Users can convert raw images to 15 different file types, including JPEG and GIF. In general, there's nothing impressive or even particularly interesting here. The program does contain filters that are more common to bitmap-editing programs, but their usefulness is questionable. We're not sure features even matter so much when a program's interface make it this difficult and frustrating to use.

Able RAWer is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We do not recommend this program; there are many alternatives out there that are more intuitive and have better features.
