      "The best journaling app around."

      October 3, 2010  |   By rfcee

      Version: viJournal 2.3.7

      Pros

As a journal it's great: a diary and as a place to store associated documents, pictures. Good support from app designer, kept current by developer.

      Cons

I'm not always happy with how it sets up pages for printing out, but that's really just a matter of learning how it works. Not a limitation, just a tweaking requirement.

      Summary

I've used it for several years. No other app has served my purposes as well: personal diary, storehouse for special documents, a few pictures of special relevance, responsive developer. A number of updates, no charges for improvement. Highly recommended

"This is a nice journaling application"

      February 26, 2009  |   By Vermonter17032

      Version: viJournal 2.1.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
viJournal is a nice application if all you're looking for is a place to keep a daily journal. In fact, it is far more convenient than some of the other popular journaling applications, like MacJournal and Journler, because it has all the features you need and few of the ones you don't need.

      "Once more, to be fair."

      January 3, 2009  |   By hlb9

      Version: viJournal 2.0.2

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I gave version 2.0.2 another shot after reading jeremy's reply, and this time, things worked. I'm not sure why the procedures he's referring to didn't function when I first tried 2.0.2, but they do now. I still prefer viJournal 1.9; it's simply a visually more streamlined, cleaner implementation. The new design of the library with its arrows and subheaders is too spread out for meâ??I like to be able to see all the dates and descriptions at a glance, as is possible with the 'table'-like look of the library in 1.9, and for some reason I also like to have it on the right (perhaps there is a way to switch this around that I haven't discovered yet?). But these are mostly matters of my personal preference; to be fair, viJournal 2.0.2 is perfectly functional, and in terms of design and price still a better choice than its free or more costly competitors. So here's your stars back.

      "Dedicated Developer"

      Version: viJournal 1.7.6

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I had a conflict with viJournal, SpotPicker and Unsanity's WindowShade. ScoobySoft answered my request for help and kept answering until I had nearly four years of journals restored.

As an enthusiatic user who finds the program ideal for daily journaling and keeping journals for specific issues, I cannot stress enough how important a responsive and dedicated developer is in my software selections and ongoing product loyalty.

This dedicated developer responds promptly and thourghly. Bravo! Bravo! WAere that we had more of his caliber!

      Summary

Yes, I may well own a three year old PowerBoook (1st Gen 867Mhz 12" Alu) but I pride myself on the fact that I only install the very finest software on it.

      viJournal is no exception.

Whatever you want from this little app (personal diary, blogging or info management) this is a must have!

Polished GUI and extremely well thought out and easy to use.

I made my purchase within an hour of using!
You will not be disappointed :-)

A five star application which has me already looking forward to future updates with bated breath

      "Excellent Application!"

      Version: viJournal 1.6.3

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I just recently (3 months ago) started keeping a journal with viJournal. I've found using it to be a breeze and the interface smooth. I especially like that you can hide most of its functionality so you can focus on what's important, the writing.

After using it for a while now I find that it's my perferred place to write! Any new documentation I have to put together for my job, I start it in viJournal. It's where my ideas flow.

Thanks for making a great product!

      "Good writing development tool"

      September 27, 2005  |   By v1m

      Version: viJournal 1.5.7

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I detest much software, but I love viJournal. I'll have it open daily alongside Mellel, as it is superb for taking notes and refining my projects.

What this app excels at is simple functionality: its layout could be no cleaner, its few minimalist controls no less obtrusive. It offers that transparency and rational simplicity I value in design. This is as far as you can travel from the dorky mess of Microsoft products.

There's a great speedy search function. One additional valuable feature is the slide-out Notes tray, which offers more area for jotting down stuff. (And if the author adds the ability to export this material to .rtf, too, the program will be perfect).

      Highly recommended.

      "Frustraing"

      March 25, 2005  |   By coffeebuzzard--2008

      Version: viJournal 1.5.1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It seems like it might be a great start. But I was frustrated almost immediately. Whether this is good feedback for you or for the developer...

I've been looking for a journal solution that I could integrate photos in for a long time. Ideally, I'd like to have a pointer from my iCal that I have a log entry for that day.

This certainly isn't a full review since my frustrations with this product in the 5 minutes finally made me give up. The interface? It's a nice attempt, somewhat apple-esk, but not at all intuitive. A sample dialogue with myself as I tried to use it. " ... Didn't I just click that other button and have the same thing happen? What the heck is that thing? Why won't that go away? How do I... hey, that's kind of cool. Wait ... I can't ... go way. Go AWAY! BE GONE!!! Awe, forget it."

The little buttons in the bottom right corner of the main window make no sense and they don't redraw correctly when resizing the main window. Ugly. When clicking on the right button, some kind of mini-window of entry listings appears, but once it's popped up, there appeared at first to be no way to get rid of the blasted thing once it appeared since the only button to get rid of it was actually hidden by the popup window! I couldn't move it or get rid of it. What the? I kept looking for the OS X red yellow green buttons at the top of the window, only to find a neutral bar that did nothing. Somehow I was finally able to resize the main window behind the mini-window to find the button to make it go away.

Adding a photo is great! But what the freakin' heck is the deal with seeing a ghost image of the bottom portion of the main photo every time a mouse over occurs with the thumbnail. First of all, the whole photo isn't visible, only the bottom half. What the? Secondly, what's the point of seeing just a ghost image in the first place? Third, even changing the preference so that the main photo appears "only when clicked" does nothing. The gigantic bottom half of a ghost image still appears with every thumbnail mouse-over. Again frustrating. Forth, oh well you get the idea...

The most frustrating: I got into some kind of Save Dialogue Box hell as I was unable to click anywhere in the main window without getting a "The entry changed, do you want to save it?" dialogue. Clicking yes gave me "You don't have privileges to do this" even though I'm logged in as an admin. And the dialogue box wouldn't go away. Clicking "no" gave me the same dialogue over and over again... "The entry changed do you want to save it?" No. "The entry changed do you want to save it?" No. "The entry changed do you want to save it?" No. "The entry changed do you want to save it?" No. I tried quitting the app, but that dialogue would not go away, no matter what I tried. I forced quit the app, repaired privileges on my drive and tried the app again. This unfortunately made no difference as the same problems continued to occur.

Normally I wouldn't bother taking the time to write anything, I'd just trash the app and never bother with it again, but I felt like sharing my frustration.

My search for a decent journal app that lets me add photos to my entries continues.

      "Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!"

      April 30, 2004  |   By coshields

      Version: viJournal 1.1.4

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I really love this Journal and it's iterface is much more attractive and easy-to-use than the others I've tried. The interface is simple, intuitive and has the feel of a traditional journal without all of the icons and links that make most journal program just look like a text editor. I do wish it were possible to navigate via a calendar and print journal entries by date range, but I truly appreciate the simple and straightforward approach. If you are truly looking for a subtle yet powerful solution that just lets you write the way you really want to write...this is the one!
