CNET Editors' review
YemuZip is a simple, free utility with a single purpose: to help you easily create Mac- and PC-friendly ZIP files with just a quick drag and drop. The Mac OS already includes ZIP-compression functionality (which you can access through contextual menus), but YemuZip add some extras--most importantly, the option to choose between Mac-specific and PC-compatible formats, removing the Mac metadata in the resource fork that can otherwise make ZIP files made on a Mac unreadable on PCs.
You just drag files into YemuZip's main window, or onto the YemuZip Dock icon, and the app creates a zipped archive in a destination you specify (or even directly into a Mail attachment). You can set the app to automatically quit after compression, and for PC-compatible files, you can also adjust compression performance and speed. If you regularly create ZIP files (especially that you share with PC users), YemuZip should be an obvious addition to your arsenal.
Publisher's Description
From Yellow Mug Software:
YemuZip is an easy-to-use application for making zip files. Unlike the Finder's built-in archive or compress function, YemuZip lets you choose between a Mac-specific format (resource fork-preserving) and a PC-compatible format (with resource forks removed).
What's new in this version: Added an option to keep file extension in the default file name.

"Nice utility"
Version: YemuZip 2.4.2
Pros

I ran into a randow bug with the product. The product would fail every say 12 times it was used. Outside of that it works. Author did not want to spend the time recreating/fixing the problem.

Do not use if you have a critical application.

"Good for cross-platform sharing with non-Mac computers."
Version: YemuZip 2.3.2
Pros
Optionally leaves out extra hidden Mac-related files that show up when unzipping on non-Mac computers such as MS Windows & Linux. Also quick & simple to use. Drag and drop to the app's icon, or its open window. Automatically checks for updates.
Cons
Can't think of any cons.
Summary
I distribute my cross-platfrom app to the world as simply a zipped file. That seems to be working well, except for one problem for the non-Mac crowd. When creating the zip on my Mac using the Finder command File > Compress, extra files or folders are included for Mac-savvy features. On a Mac, the extra file/folders are invisible. But on Linux and Windows computers, the users see this extra crud and are likely to get confused. I have found 2 easy alternatives.
Path Finder
This excellent app from CocoaTech is a Swiss Knife full of diverse tools, handy for a range of geeks and programmers. It costs about forty bucks, and so worth it. Relevant here is the ability to create zips. By default it creates zips in the same Mac-savvy way. To strip that extra stuff in future zips, in Path Finder preferences, turn ON the two "Ignore" checkboxes.
? Ignore invisible file when compressing
? Ignore resource forks when compressing
YemuZip
This free app from Yellow Mug does one simple thing: Create zips. Drag-and drop easy. With the option of stripping away the Mac-specific stuff. Perfect. Even includes a feature to check for updates. -

Great app. Well worth donating to.
Makes pro-quality ZIP files without MacOS X hidden files (which is the problem of using OS X's built-in 'Archive' feature in the Finder).
You can choose to switch off the 'advert' in the preferences if you donate.

"Mildly useful for extracting files from a Zip archive"
Version: YemuZip 2.3
Pros
Easy to select discrete files for extraction.
Cons
Can't add files to an existing Zip archive.
Summary
Nothing like WINZIP on the Mac horizon. Shame!
