• Good with some very big BUTS...

  Summary

  Yadis performs a continuous backup. You can see it working because it periodically displays callouts from the icon in the notification area. However, it does not delete files even though that is option. It also does not seem to honor the exclude mask filters either. It will attempt to back up the ntuser.DAT and ntuser.dat.LOG files in the user directory even if the files are filtered out. This means setting up multiple backup tasks. These two problems combined put over 10,000 copies of the Yadis backup log on the backup drive because it kept every log error it posted, even though those files no longer existed on the source drive. Bottom line: good for a simple backup of a "My Documents" that doesn't change very much. If this is not your use case, I recommend using something else.

  - (Online) manual/FAQ/support is not very comprehensive. Haven't found any way in the program or on the authors' site to contact them or provide feedback either. - Real-time backup of a hard drive over network is not as thorough as it could be.

  Summary

  I use Yadis to keep the contents of an entire hard drive (HD), containing nothing but loose files, backuped on another HD, which is in another computer in my home network. Yadis gets the job done, but I would like to point out a few weak points, as well as make suggestions for future releases. What I'd like Yadis to do, is to keep a real time, "synchronized" version of the source HD on the target HD. This means that every action I undertake on the source HD, should be undertaken by Yadis on the remote (target) HD. This is only partially the case. Yadis immediately and very effectively: - copies newly created files to the target - applies any changes made in a certain file to the same file on the target HD. However, Yadis does seem to have a problem deleting files and folders on the target that have been deleted on the source. Strangely, processing delete events is an option that is available for each task, but it doesn't not seem to be working properly. This goes for manually deleted files as well as files deleted by programs. An example of the latter: if I create a new notepad file by right-clicking in Windows Explorer and choosing New->Notepad file, Windows creates a blank notepad file with a standard name. If I open this file, edit it, and save under a different name, Windows saves the new file and makes the old blank one disappear. When I go and look at the target drive however, I find both the blank file and the edited one. It would be great if this could be changed. Another suggestion I'd like to make is to provide more information/feedback in the program's main window. An important example of such information is to display what a certain task is doing (example "currently backlogging/copying file X") in addition to the "status" information already displayed. Warnings about files that could not be copied and other important messages should also be put more in the spotlight. (This information is currently only available by searching log files.) Yadis also displays a lot of information through pop-up text balloons at its tray icon. Perhaps this can be moved to the main window as well.

  Pros

  In just a few steps you can create a task, and afterwards Yadis does it all for you. It's a really trustworthy real-time backup-tool

  It would be nice if it had some more filtering options. I look forward to an ftp-upload too
