Yadis Backup

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET staff on January 12, 2012

When it comes to protecting your PC, there's no substitute for full backups capable of resurrecting your system from total disaster. But we're also big fans of regular targeted backups of personal files, favorites, and other data you don't want to lose, especially if your big backups are fairly infrequent. To be sure none of your important stuff falls between the cracks, we recommend a specialized backup application like Yadis Backup from Codessentials. This free tool creates full, one-to-one backups of your important personal data, settings, and documents that you can access normally, without having to restore them or unpack them through Yadis.

Yadis has a simple but efficient interface with two modes, novice and expert. A setup wizard let us choose whether to start Yadis with Windows and similar options. This program's wizards made creating backup tasks a simple matter of clicking clearly labeled icons and check boxes, even in Expert mode, which offers all the settings of the standard mode but with more options. Using the program's wizard, we created standard backups, quickly backed up our Favorites folder, and modified existing tasks. We browsed to the files or folders we wanted to back up, and then selected a destination for our backup, which can be an USB drive or other removable drive. The program doesn't recommend using an internal hard disk, even a separate one. We could also specify FTP destinations, a nice option to have. Yadis saved exact copies of our specified files, creating duplicate subfolders and directories that we could open and access normally. The program keeps log files, too. When Yadis is running, we could click its system tray icon to access the Monitor and Actions menu.

If you've ever restored a whole system from a backup file, you'll know that the things you miss the most are usually the most recently saved or created data, which is what your full backup missed. Regularly scheduled automatic backups of your critical data and significant stuff will save you a lot of grief at some point. Yadis Backup can take care of that for you.

"Just what the average home user needs! Simple & quick."

    March 12, 2009  |   By lalusam

    Version: Yadis Backup 1.6.5

    Pros

    Fast
    Simple
Full control over Source / target
Access to backup is direct. (Compression is really irrelevant these days.
    Versions
Free - can't believe it! (everyone who continues to use it should donate)

    Cons

Just started using it - don't know how reliable (very important) it is.
Lack of many other options is seen as a con by some (I think it is a strength)

    Summary

Just think about what the average home user needs for backup -
YOU choose the folders you need to backup, then have them independently stored in a different location IN REAL TIME - simple! Exactly what Yadis Backup does without a fuss!
All the other options offered (or forced on you) by other programs are impractical eg.
Schedules (think about it - pretty useless in the home situation),
compression (storage is cheap - you don't need to compress & worry about your compressed file not opening later),
encryption (your source files are rarely encrypted so why the backup), etc.
Having versions is, however, a very practical thing as it actually enhances functionality of document management of the source files.
Just take a moment to think of what you really need from a backup program - it's all here!!
I really think that this is a very good, no frills, practical solution for "document backup" for the home user. I have not found any problems with it so far. Using it on XP pro & backing up to a NAS (D-link DNS-323). Backs-up even if source file is still open.

There is a note that a manual check should be made of backups periodically - don't know how one is expected to do that without using another program - does this question the reliability of this product (I hope not) - guess I'll find out after using it for a bit.

    "Fabulous program!"

    June 18, 2008  |   By aogden

    Version: Yadis Backup 1.6.5

    Pros

The main thing to like about this program is that your files are backed up in real time. You create or edit a file in a watched folder and it is immediately backed up to your backup location (even to an FTP site!). It has already saved me when the power was out and I had backed up to an external portable HD. A must have program, IMHO.

    "It seems to do nothing"

    December 12, 2007  |   By AppsUser

    Version: Yadis Backup 1.6.5

    Pros

It doesn't seem to do anything! (And 1 star is only because CNET doesn't allow 0 star ratings!)

    Cons

Well, I installed it, let it run, and nothing seems to happen - there's no help file or tutorial and it's just sitting on my taskbar and system tray doing apparently very little.

    I've uninstalled.
