"Why the negativity?"
Version: Wondershare Data Recovery 4.3.1
IT WORKED BETTER THAN ANY OTHER RECOVERY PROGRAM THAT I TRIED (see below).
It recovered not just my files but my whole partition with the original directory structure and file names.
User interface is a bit rough in spots. My biggest complaint in this department was that the list of partitions it found had no scroll bar. So to see the partitions at the bottom of the list I had to select on of the upper ones and then hit the down arrow - not intuitive.
I don't understand why there is so much negativity from other reviewers. I had great success with this software. It was able to recover a lost partition that two other packages failed to recover. One more thought. I tested the files that it recovered and they all appeared to be undamaged and in their original condition.
Some brief history. I accidentally re-partitioned a drive that contained 4 partitions. One of those four I wanted to get back (others where just clone backups). The one I wanted back had VMware virtual machine directories containing thousands of files. So a file level recovery (where names are lost) was not going to cut it. I had to recover the whole partition with its directory structure and file names intact.
First I tried TestDisk & PhotoRec from cgsecurity.org. This program found partitions but the output was so confusing with multiple overlapping potential partitions that I gave up. Then I tried Disk Drill from CleverFiles. It did not find any of the lost partitions but did a better job of finding lost files than did PhotoRec. But as I said, finding lost files was useless for my application where there are thousands of files in a VMware machine directory.
Then I tried Data Recovery for Mac from Wondershare. It found a bunch of partitions and ranked then by its ability to recover from them. I selected the one that looked like the one I wanted, and that had a good chance of recovery, and then told the program to search for files. It recovered the whole partition with the original structure. So I paid the $90 got the license and then saved my files to another disk.

Updated on Oct 16, 2013I just noticed that I posted this under the Windows version. My review is for the Mac version.
Updated on Nov 15, 2013I have just used this product again to recover a lost Time Machine partition. I would lower the rating to 4 stars since I found that a Time Machine partition recovered with this software can't be used by OS X' Time Machine interface. The data is still there (i.e. backed up files) and it can be found using a program like Find Any File, but the whatever special file attributes that are needed for Time Machine have been lost so that interface no longer works.
Version: Wondershare Data Recovery 4.2
It finds your file.
Tries to force you to pay $86 to get it.
These people should be ashamed of themselves. I mistakenly downloaded this program in an attempt to recover a missing Word file. It found the file, but wouldn't let me have it unless I paid $86. Some free trial that is.
That's not the worst part. I called my boyfriend and he told me how to find it in the hidden Library folder in like 2 seconds. So they are basically trying to charge you $86 for something you can do yourself if you know where to look.
Honestly, it's a pure ripoff, don't waste your time. They are preying on people who are worried that they've lost their files.
Low life scammers.
"Worked when none of the others did."
Version: Wondershare Data Recovery 4.1.1
I was trying to recover video files from a USB drive. I tried a bunch of other programs, all of which I pulled from Cnet.com, but none of them worked. Some would not let me access the thumb drive, saying I needed to be an authorized user (I am), and some didn't even see it. This program found the drive, scanned it, and found more files than I even knew were there. I was only able to recover the one I was after--I guess because it had just been deleted--but that's what I needed.
It showed my 7 "recoverable" video files, but didn't let me download any of them until I had bought the full version (for $29.00, not $39.00 as I saw on Cnet). Once I had bought it, only one of the recovered files was useable. But it was the one I wanted, so this program saved my ass.
The free version showed more recoverable video files on my USB drive than the paid version actually recovered, but the one it got (the one just deleted) was the one I needed. It worked when other did not, so for me it was well worth the 29 buck I paid.
"DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE DEMO"
Version: Wondershare Data Recovery 3.0.2
None... demo doesn't work so real app probably doesn't either
Application scans your disk and shows you what files were deleted. Has no ability to recover them
"Recovers items, but you can't open them."
Version: Wondershare Data Recovery 1.5
It does recover all kinds of things.
You can't open the files, or if you can all that shows up is a bunch of garbled stuff. It doesn't restore your files the way you had them before you lost them, it recovers to a bunch of numbered items and you have to go through each one.
don't waste your money! we tried to get a refund but only got apologies. now we are out the money and our lost files. Don't buy WD products as a backup either, that loses your files, hence the reason we tried wondershare data recovery.
