Editors' review

Webroot SecureAnywhere is a blazing-fast malware scanner that offers protection from phishing attacks, software hijacks, and more.

Pros

Excellent design: Webroot uses colors to indicate the protection status of products. Green stands for fully protected, orange represents a warning state, and red indicates a critical vulnerability. For example, disabling the real-time shield pulls up a caption notification and immediately puts the Webroot SecureAnywhere state into the red, making it difficult for others to hijack and disable the antivirus software unnoticed.

Lightweight: Webroot's complete installation takes up around 1MB of space. The AntiVirus version doesn't take a very noticeable toll on your system, even for full scans -- a complete scan took less than 30 seconds, which blows most scan times out of the water. However, SecureAnywhere also puts less emphasis on definition-based scans compared to similar applications in the field, and instead puts more weight on cloud-based scanning.

Cons

Uncertain performance: Webroot SecureAnywhere is responsive, adapting to your machine's activities and behaviors. SecureAnywhere may not initially categorize certain activity as malicious until it learns and digests the behavior, and there's no real way to predict when the app will learn enough to become effective in assessing that threat.

Bottom Line

Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus is an impressive product overall. It has a solid performance ranking, barely takes a toll on your system, and has a clear user interface that makes its workings transparent. Though Webroot's heavier, cloud-based approach to online security makes it hard to rate against other antivirus apps, the change is perhaps a necessary step to keep up with current security threats.

"Very slow, and blocks Java... updates (lock appears)!"

    August 11, 2014   |   By scottls59901

    Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus 2014

    Pros

Low price, but you get what you pay for....

    Cons

I have fast cable internet (30down/3.76up mbps), but Big Lags waiting for the cloud to catch up!
It won't allow Java/Flash updates from GUI/net, and WR support says you must uninstall/reinstall every time (HASSLE!).
Firewall is out, and uses Win7 firewall for in.

    Summary

I'm Much happier with ESET Smart Security7 (cheaper at other websites...)!

"Maybe not the best, but good enough"

    March 09, 2014   |   By weirdwallee

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

Seems to work well. No problems - yet. Less of a resource hog than Norton Antivirus.

    Cons

Can't think of any - but if it lets a virus thru, I'll then definitely have one.

    Summary

A lot of people I talk to don't like this antivirus - however none of them can tell me exactly why. I realize it is not the best antivirus on the market, and reviewers like PC World and Cnet do not include it on their lists when reviewing antiviruses, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. It's definitely less of a resource hog than Norton!

"Do people still pay money for anti-virus programs?"

    January 02, 2014   |   By Joe_Schmoe

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

It does do a quick scan, I'll give it that.

    Cons

    False positives, bogus uninstall.

    Summary

Since the days of Spy Sweeper, Webroot has always been notorious for falsely flagging legitimate software, but with the new cloud-based approach used by SecureAnywhere, I thought I'd give them another try.

So much for that. I was hoping they might get it together, but nothing's changed. Just like Spy Sweeper before it, Webroot's latest offering is still crippling totally clean programs that I've loved and used for years. Why would anyone pay for this garbage when free anti-virus programs abound across the Internet? It makes no sense.

"Don't touch it with a barge pole!"

    November 06, 2013   |   By john_turnbull

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

    None at all

    Cons

Webroot deletes files created by other software. There is no warning and no explanation. All you know is that software you have had for years suddenly starts going wrong and it can take you ages to figure out that its this crappy thing that's messing you up.

If you have not yet downloaded, don't. If you've got the trial, bin it and get something else. If you've already parted with your money, you can partially salvage the situation by....
    Click on Identity Protection
Click on the cog wheel to the right of Identity Protection
Click on the Application Protection Tab
Locate all your favourite software and click the Allow buttons

    "Works for me"

    October 19, 2013   |   By BC3050

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

It is fast and not a memory and resource hog. It has protected my pc from a couple of bad websites and some bad downloads and links and Utube videos. The "sandbox" feature is a big plus for online shopping and banking. The password manager is a nice plus as well as the mobile protection for cell phone and tablet.

    Cons

Haven't had anything to complain about so far.

    Summary

I purchased this at a discount when I purchased my laptop. Working 6 months without a problem.

"Cant trust it used it for year 2012"

    June 22, 2013   |   By master_mind413

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

I used it the entire year of 2012 It was quick and light on resources also the "Complete Plus" Included security for all of our Android phones.

    Cons

While I had no issues the entire year of 2012 this was probably because we had not been attacked some how. Within a week after renewing for another year $80 mind you. We got attacked and this thing acted like swiss cheese. The computer slowed down " we got tons of pop up's" random windows account opened as a guest. as well as several BHO Objects. No Security this is nothing but a face "Comparable to a Rent A Cop "

    Summary

I removed it then used malwarebytes and House call as well as eventually installing ESET security suit there was 2 Key Loggers 3 Trojans a whole army of spyware and adaware BHO's while this was running. We just wasted $80 I thought I should warn every one about webroot and if I can save you from wasting money then it will be worth the wasted $80 we spent.

"The nest AV / anti-malware curently available"

    June 04, 2013   |   By FrankPizza

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

I've been using Webroot for over a year and previously as Prevx product. It's by far the most effective and least intrusive, low resource AV / security software availalble, by a big margin, and I have done lots of tests to prove it.

    Cons

Really none that I can think of, genuinely.

    "Not worth the effort"

    May 12, 2013

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

IF it actually does what it says (scan & protect), it does so quickly & easily and it has a great user interface.

    Cons

I only used a free trial, during which time ZERO threats were found on my laptop (WinVista Home w/ Windows Defender & MalWareBytes). After uninstalling this program at Control Panel, there were STILL daily popup reminders to BUY the full application as well as it retaining all my program settings; it took only ten seconds to restore the program & my settings "invisibly" (I thought to try re-installing it to see if it had its own uninstaller). Although it didn't re-show up in my start menu, I could invoke it from the taskbar icon & run a scan. I then had to manually scour my folders & registry to (hopefully) completely eliminate it.

    Summary

I felt safe while I had it installed, but after spending the entire morning trying to get rid of this program, I DO NOT feel safe FROM WEBROOT. Time will tell.

"Malware pretending to be security software"

    May 08, 2013   |   By AdamNYC

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

    None. This is malware.

    Cons

    Downloaded surreptitiously with another program.

    Reported false positives.

    HUGE resource hog.

The worst "security" or "antivirus" software I've ever found on my computer.

"super program, no ... super super program"

    April 13, 2013   |   By ChoiceVoice

Version: Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2012 8.0.2.118

    Pros

-this thing is unbelievably small and has absolutely no impact on your computer. I have used a lot and nothing is remotely close to this.
-this small package holds a lot of stuff. best heuristic around, webroot def in cloud, firewall, identity protection, process manager and controller, sandbox.
    -pc mag 2013 best antivirus.
    -disk load around 400k/s
-on disk: 709 kb. yes, that is not a typo. I once saw a computer using trend micro with around a 1 gb. I think kaspersky (an excellent product) uses over 400mb (please post correction if i'm off)
    -reputable company from lawful country.
-great customer service. I've dealt with them several times and never had a problem.
-according to testing: avg uses 16x more memory, Kaspersky uses 15x, mchafee uses 20x etc etc.
-you can use this with another antivirus is you want, it is designed by webroot not to conflict and is so light you wouldn't even know webroot is there.

    Cons

-none. this is the cat's meow.
-there protection approach is different than everyone else and is difficult for independent testers to evaluate. it is extremely effective at keeping your system clean, not sure how good it is when loaded onto infected system.

    Summary

what do you get when webroot buys and combines these products with webroot spysweeper: threatfire (hired all their developers after mcafee bought them out) and prevx (smallest, lightest antivirus and awesome identity protection). you get secure anywhere.
