From R2d2 Software:

Virtual Desktop Toolbox enlarges your monitor by dynamically creating multiple non-virtual (standalone) or virtual (shareable) desktops. You can organize programs and windows by categories in different desktops, share programs, and windows between virtual desktops (either statically or dynamically using rules), group your desktops within a virtual screen and easily and quickly switch from one desktop to another one.

Using the creation wizard, the Auto Run feature, scenarios and profiles, you can prepare desktops and programs for later use. Using built-in tools, you can easily (through drag 'n drop, contextual menus, tool tips) customize your workplace: background picture, sound, icons visibility, and position, Windows notification area. To make desktops and windows management easier, you can use the tremendous visual menu that allows managing and viewing all desktops within a single pane. Version 2.72.4 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

  • Version reviewed: Virtual Desktop Toolbox 2.72.4
Tricky to manage, this free utility offers a vast array of options to create an endless number of virtual desktops. Virtual Desktop Toolbox's interface is flooded with options. After weeding through the options to create your desktops, each independent desktop will have its own display settings and wallpaper. Switching among virtual desktops is easy using the system tray icon or with customizable hot keys. A host of other configurable options such as managing icons, windows, and time tracking make the program a little harder than most virtual desktop programs we've seen. Windows are conveniently movable among desktops using the drag-and-drop feature, but only if the desktop was initially set up as virtual. This application comes with considerable help to learn its ins and outs, including an online user's guide, a lengthy creation wizard, and a folder full of question-answering Word files, although going through all of that can be a headache in itself. Though it takes a considerable amount of time to become acquainted with its features, this application is a feasible pick for creating multiple desktops.

    Version: Virtual Desktop Toolbox 2.72.4

    "Works Perfektly! Perfektly! Perfektly! Per..."

    by Erin T on September 6, 2006

Pros: Lots of features, well designed, easy to use and understand interface. Allows you to extend you desktop as far and wide as you want. It's almost a dream come true, were it not for the nightmares!

Cons: 1. it a feature called "rolling desktops." Sounds cool. DO NOT TRY IT! Once on it just goes and goes (etc.) like the energizer bunny. The 'feature' automatically changes from one desktop to another every x # of seconds. So you're working on something and bloop you're not. Sending an email, NOT! Talking to a friend, then... well it gets frustrating. There are settings to turn it off, doesn't work. There are setting to set the time delay between screen changes, I set it at 31000 seconds (@ 8 hr.s) to try and make it less frustrating. No help. Finally my laptop was damaged when I shot it.

    2. They made it needlessly complicated. Virtual Desktop should be simple right? No. They have desktops, Virtual desktops, Virtual screens, Non-virtual desktops, Non-Virtual desktops, sub-desktops, different subsets of the combinations, some have full windows capabilities, some partial... I'm sure it's well thought out and will serve the developer or tech person well. However some of us just use a PC as a tool, want to get work done, and get done. I do not have 1/2 day to spend tweaking all of the different settings or messing with why my non-virtual sub-desktop might work better if it was a virtual desktop as a subset of a non-virtual screen set. Perhaps you do.

    3. Other than the screen changing and being slightly over complicated it ran well. Please don't let my being in a bad mood scare you away from an otherwise good product. Might work for you! :)

    Version: Virtual Desktop Toolbox 2.72.4

"Overly complicated - many features that are nigh useless to the average user"

    by dalriada22 on January 23, 2007

Pros: Free. Very flexible interface. Ability to customize just about anything.

Cons: Requires several hours to configure with a simple setup. Unable to easily switch applications from one desktop to the other (no drag and drop unless you use the special 'desktop explorer' and then, it works imperfectly - goscreen is better)

    "Perfect. Not overly complicated imho."

by Hanzl on April 20, 2008

    Pros: Dont agree with Dalriada22.

Was on the lookout for a virtual desktop that could do more than the average virtual desktop tools. So not only shared desktops. Tried goscreen on your recommendation but this can not compete with this tool imho. And "no hours of configuring". Just a few minutes and it was running as i wanted it to run. This is a keeper for me.

    "The Publisher No longer Exists?"

by nidaba on May 9, 2009

Pros: Didn't get a chance to evaluate this, because as soon as I spotted the part where you had 90 days to register, I stopped my evaluation and emailed the registration. I got no reply and the trial expired! Now somewhere in my registry, I'm locked out!!!

Cons: Good way to waste your time! The publisher no longer exists! At least the link to their web site was an expired GoDaddy account and after several months of waiting I still haven't gotten a reply or key to unlock the program after the 90 day trial.

Summary: I wrote a review once about this, but it didn't get published. I guess CNET wants you to waste your time too. I've written several reviews on other products, but CNET's attitude will probably get me to stop. It use to be a good thing, now it's becom... read more >>
