ShiningMorning's Virtual Audio Streaming software creates a virtual sound card in your Windows system. It acts as a wrapper on your existing sound card, enhancing its capabilities and making it easy to record and stream whatever audio your system is playing, no matter what the source: microphone, media player, or external device. It also improves sound recording in Windows, even automatically fixing the "no Stereo Mix" problem in Windows 7 and Vista. It's free to try for 30 days, but the trial version places an audio "watermark" on the output.

Virtual Audio Streaming's main window isn't the program's main interface; the System Tray icon's menu accesses all the features most users need most of the time. It's just as well since the main window isn't particularly intuitive or attractive; for example, you have to scroll the Recording box up or down a few millimeters to view it all, even though the interface itself resizes by dragging. Nevertheless, it explained how to set Virtual Audio Streaming as our default device for playback and recording on the Windows Sound properties dialog. We're well familiar with this, yet we couldn't get Virtual Audio Streaming to play audio over our system's speakers, headphones, or any audio output. Our system sound played normally when we tested it in the Sound properties, yet we couldn't get Virtual Audio Streaming to play audio through it. It's easy enough to switch between playback and recording devices from the program's tray menu, but the inability to hear what you're recording is a major setback. Clicking Help took us to the program's Web site and some FAQs, none of which addressed the issue. All our drivers and settings were up to date, leaving us at a loss to explain the silence.

The trial version's annoying "watermark" consists of a digitally distorted female voice interspersed with bursts of intense noise. And the fact is, Virtual Audio Streaming doesn't do anything you can't do with freeware, such as Webcast system audio instead of just your microphone input, or fixing the "no Stereo Mix" issue. Many tools offer superior recording capabilities, too. Keep listening!

Pros
Capable in recording online music or voice and supports on both 32 bit as well as 64 bit operating system. There is no loss of quality when an audio is recorded or broadcast.
Cons
A bit confusing for new users because they might be new to the interface and might be unaware of the consequences and the technicalities of sound redirections.

I don't know how to give 0 out of 5 stars because this was that bad. It didn't work. It was bad and should feel bad too. Also, when I try to get it off my computer, it won't allow me. Screw you ShiningMorning. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay for this crap.

Pros
Records audio stream into a .wav file, in my case from satellite radio. Sound quality seems good (though I'm no audiophile). Trial version is good because it will record a long stretch without voice over and before interference kicks in, so you can get a real sense of what it sounds like.
Cons
Controls not at all intuitive and instructions are ambiguous and vague and so it takes a fair amount of trial and error to figure things out. I can't figure out how to record and listen at the same time because the only way I could get it to record was to tell my computer that Virtual Audio Streaming program is the speaker. Also I learned through error that when it starts a new .wav file sometimes it creates a new file name but sometimes it reuses an old name which of course erases the entire file that was under the old name. So it's crucial to manually rename the file as soon as a recording is finished.
Summary
OK I guess. Before I buy I'm going to try other options, but this might turn out to be the best.

Looks to do what it says but was wrong choice for my purpose.

Attempt to uninstall yields "Virtual Audio Streaming is still running and must be closed before you can continue". It isn't running and there isn't a trace of it in Task Manager.

You can't get rid of it if trial shows it was the wrong choice.

- Can record sounds on Windows 7 64bit even if the stereo mix is diable. - I also use it to redirect sound as Audacity's input. - good recording quality.

Summary
I searched for a workable sound recording software. All most all other sound recording software relay on Windows stereo mix feature, those software work well in XP, but not for Vista/7, especially for 64bit Windows. As a virtual sound card driver, Virtual Audio Streaming can work without system stereo mix. I also use it to stream files as virtual microphone. :-)

Pros
Generally works as promised for recording streaming audio. Very easy interface. Finally gets around the Stereo Mix problem for Win7.
Cons
Frequent skips of recorded audio. Couldn't get it so that I could listen to the audio as it was being recorded.
Summary
The recorded streaming audio from a podcast was so close to being perfect - really great sound quality. Unfortunately there were numerous skips on the finished track, whether the length was 60 seconds or 6 minutes. The skips would happen randomly within every 10 second block of time - I don't know if this was a trial feature as the documentation wasn't very clear. (There was supposed to be "noise" in the trial but I couldn't hear anything noticeable.) I tried changing buffer lengths within the program but the skips remained. Okay for an interview but not for music. Resolve the skips and it's a winner for my basic needs.
