Editors' review

NCH Software's VideoPad Video Editor Professional is a full-featured video-editing tool that is surprisingly easy to use. It can combine numerous clips and soundtracks in a wide range of video formats into movie projects, or build an entire production out of a single clip. It supports drag-and-drop editing, real-time effects previews, format conversion, importing and exporting files, captions, narration, and more. It can burn DVDs, HDs, and Blu-ray discs and output video to portable devices. It can also capture video from camcorders and other devices.

It's a rare video editor that you can just fire up and start making movies with, but that's what we did with VideoPad Pro. We browsed to a cartoon saved as an MPG file. VideoPad Pro scanned it and displayed it in the left half of the split main view, with its frames running sequentially along the bottom of a main preview window in a scrollable, time-marked view, and also displayed its information in the left-hand Media List panel. Pressing the Play button played the clip normally. Extracting clips from the main clip was incredibly simple; using the timeline, we selected an In Point and an Out Point and clicked the green down arrow. VideoPad extracted the clip and displayed it below in the Video Track section, which is just above the similar Audio Track. In this manner, we quickly cut up and rearranged the cartoon out of sequence, and then previewed it in the right-hand pane. The transitions between merged clips were seamless. We could save our finished clip or subject it to a wide range of processing and production tools. Toolbar icons let us quickly insert blank spaces or add narration, captions, and other effects. Clicking Build Movie called up a dialog that let us select the video format and whether to burn a disc, send it to a portable device, upload it to YouTube, and other choices.

With smartphones, video sharing sites, and Webcams everywhere, there's no lack of raw video resources, just a need for a powerful, easy-to-use tool like VideoPad Video Editor Professional to put your projects together, polish them up, and present them in the format of your choice. More than just fast and competent, though, we also found it fun to use.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of VideoPad Video Editor Professional 2.2.0. The trial version is limited to 14 days.

    "I love this product!"

    August 29, 2014   |   By HeavySoftwareUser

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.55

    Pros

I've been using VideoPad for about 3 years now. The interface has changed over the years and at first I didn't like it, but once I got used to it I realized it's the same great program I have always used. I encourage anyone looking for a good video editor to check it out.

    Cons

    No major problems.

"Unstable. Crashes In The Most Simple Task!"

    July 28, 2014   |   By Dosvon

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.55

    Pros

Video and audio irrelevantly! Crashes extremely often.

    Cons

Loses data. Overwrites data. Can only handle very small snips of video one at a time. It's almost worse than Windows movie maker which is another p.o.s. but at least that's free.

    Summary

Slow sw package that installed a browser hijacker/virus. Wouldn't recommend.

"If you have the computing power, NCH has the Tools"

    July 15, 2014   |   By wls

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.51

    Pros

I used VideoPad years ago, with mixed results. Now that I have a computer with plenty of RAM and CPU power, I bought the new version. In a relatively short time, I edited together multiple video and audio tracks, made transition edit and tweaked for professional look and sound. My audience (and my boss) thought it was wonderful. My theory on those who have a bad experience is that either the feature set is a bit beyond their...we'll say "skill-set"... or (more likely) they don't have enough computer power. I'm running VideoPad on an Intel i5 processor and 16GB RAM with no hesitations or crashes.

    Cons

Oh, well, I did have to go back and do an update to get rid of some glitches. Maybe recent unhappy users need to do that. Once updated, life is good, and people think I'm Steven Spielberg.

    "Not brilliant"

    June 26, 2014   |   By toyotaae95

    Version: VideoPad Video Editor 2.41

    Pros

    Easy to use...ish
    Looks good

    Cons

Downloaded the trial made a simple project to try it and exported the file but the audio got separated at this pointed rendering useless, uninstalled and reinstalled it then there was no audio at all even in preview.

The preview window would not work properly.

Very awkward when using very small video lengths (less than 2secs).

    Gets very cluttered very quickly.

    Summary

An awkward to use programme with no audio and poor preview

    Not to be recommended

"Absolutely, in every way, worthless and frustrating!"

    June 11, 2014   |   By bunzbanny

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.51

    Pros

The editor is nothing special, interface is outdated and clunky even in the latest version.

    Cons

    -SEVERELY UNintuitive
    -Ridiculously cluttered
-THE single most bloat-ware infested download I've ever encountered in my life (literally)
    -Impossible to navigate
-Overall, it functioned/performed and even looked like a program a cage of poorly developed primates put together with a few broken #2 pencils, a dried up lipstick, and random smears of their feces

    Summary

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS PROGRAM- you will spend the rest of your day undoing the damage.

"Please add more effect and translation"

    May 27, 2014   |   By Joelhers

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.36

    Pros

Simple and Nice Editing Software, add more format capturing mode (MPG, AVI) not only WMV. hope that you would consider to add more in the next release. :)

    Cons

Please add more effect and translation

    Summary

Video Editor lets we precisely edit my favorite movies scenes with a click and add effects, filters text and tons more great visual effects. As for audio, I just recorded a voicover of my brother's wedding and I'm gonna get started soon on a highlight reel from one of my favorite films--that's going on Facebook.

FYI there is a portable version of Video Editor, which can be found here:

"Easy to use and excellent results"

    May 12, 2014   |   By MacCool

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.36

    Pros

Easy to use, many formats supported, more than enough options for casual users.

    Cons

Took a little experimentation to find the best output settings. I made a short test video with my phone then just experimented with different options until I was happy with the result.

    Summary

Prior to VideoPad my only experience with video editing was with an old version of Premiere. I used VideoPad to edit cell phone videos for Youtube and found it similar to Premiere although maybe slightly less intuitive. The company has excellent tutorials on Youtube that are worth the time and will have you up and running quickly.

    "Terrible. Uninstalling it."

    May 06, 2014   |   By radhika_rocks

Version: VideoPad Video Editor Professional 3.36

    Pros

    The interface is ok.

    Cons

Absolutely no use. The final result is bulls**t.

    Summary

I fully agree with christylynn78. Its absolutely useless. I downloaded the trial version and liked the interface and functions but the final results of whatever I edit is terrible. Either the video disappears or pixellates. I accept that the trial version has limited functions but if it doesn't give even a passable result on what do you base your final decision to buy it? I haven't got even 1 good result based on which I can confidently buy this product. Uninstalling it.
