"Not as good as previous versions"
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
Free. Powerful modeling. Decent rendering.
Cons
Buggy. Bad texture size limits. Takes longer to do things than previous versions did.
Summary
I've been using trueSpace for over a decade. I started with trueSpace 2 somewhere around the year 2000-2001. I've also used trueSpace 3.2 (the previous free version) and trueSpace 4. Sadly, trueSpace 7.6 is a poor successor to the previous versions I've used. If you factor in the fact that it's free and it has many of the functions of software that costs well over $1000, it is a good program. However, it is full of bugs.
Things like using multithreading (support for multiple processor cores) will crash the program pretty often when rendering single objects. I also get a lot of "fatal error" and even "out of memory" messages, even though I'm running this on Windows 7 64-bit with more than enough RAM. There is also a bad bug where (sometimes) gluing objects together or hitting "undo" will remove materials (textures, etc.) from the mesh you're working with. Also, aside from the bugs, it has a lot of other issues. Loading .cob meshes (trueSpace 6.6 and older format meshes) takes a lot longer than it does in previous versions. Gluing objects together takes much longer than it should, as does undoing things. The worst part about it is that it has a texture image size limit of 2000x2000 pixels. Anybody who knows 3D art knows that 2000x2000 isn't very high, especially when other programs can use 16000x16000 and higher. Previous versions of trueSpace could use 4000x4000, I have no idea why this was downgraded for version 7. This texture limit makes doing high quality and large renders very difficult, since high resolution rendering requires higher resolution textures.
The other bad thing about trueSpace is that it is no longer updated or developed. In 2008, Microsoft purchased Caligari and claimed they intended to keep developing trueSpace, though they cut the project shortly thereafter. So, the legacy that is left behind by Caligari is an extremely buggy release of previously solid software. It's actually quite sad for a longtime trueSpace user such as myself.
If you want to use trueSpace, you might want to try and see if you can find a free version of trueSpace 3.2 somewhere and use that for modeling and this version for texturing and rendering. It does decent for rendering, but the slowdowns and bugs while modeling can be a real pill. -
"I can open the program and close the program"
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
it looks very neat
Cons
I cant get the directions, help, figure it out or download a user manual. Its complicated.
Summary
It could be a great way to create animation however i just cannot figure it out. I guess its not for a new user

"pretty good."
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
works good.
Cons
hard to figure some things out. Need to read tutorals. Has not been updated in a few years.
Summary
Good free 3d rendering software!

"Great 3D Design package"
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
Easy to use, great interface and perfect for modeling
Cons
No updates, limited exporting to other file formats and it has a few bugs here and there
Summary
If you learn how to avoid the bugs, how to use both sides for modeling and rendering, trueSpace7 can be your favorite application for many years to come.
Its interface and realtime rendered workspace make it easier to use than most other free 3d programs of this high standard.
If you are more artistic than technical, this is the program for you.
All in all, I'd say this is definitively worth the download. -
"Good program with lots of possibilities"
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
The program is interesting and impressive and certainly worth the time to learn.
Cons
The program is in need of instructions and tutorials.
Summary
The program has a similar output as that of Anim8tor and Blender (both freeware), with the exception that this has a library of premade objects. It needs instructions, and tutorials. There are a few on the internet and You Tube, but not enough. You are left to your own wits to try and figure it out. Considering it's free, however, you've got nothing to lose. It could use a help file and an uninstaller.
Since originally reviewing this product, I've found an excellent source of information, tutorials and examples on the Caligari web site. While I've only began to explore the unlimited possibilities of this creative program, I believe it is one that I'll make good use of for several years to come. I'm very impressed. It deserves 5 stars easily.

"Full scale 3D software for Beginners as wellas advanced"
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
The possibilities are seemingly endless and allows for editing, animation and rendering up to professional standards. A lot of plug ins are available for free and the software is compatible to most 3d models. Beginners friendly.
And its free...Cons
It has been officially discontinued and as such is not directly supported anymore. There are however lots of training videos and forums available.
Summary
Great entry into 3D animation

"Brilliant! A real Rolls-Royce amongst 3D software."
Version: TrueSpace 7.6
Pros
trueSpace7.6 besides being an extremely powerful software is very friendly. Their interface is very well set that makes working with this software to become a real pleasure.
Cons
Zero problems. Works great.
Summary
First of all, it should be noted that now the program can be used absolutely FREE! The initial cost was about $600 - which says a lot about this professional program. In early 2008, the company was acquired by Microsoft and trueSpace 7.6 was released for free. Precisely because of this I recommend downloading this program since it is still available. One of the most distinctive features of TrueSpace is its interface, using mainly 3D widgets for most common editing operations. TrueSpace can also be scripted, using Python for creating custom scripts, tools and plugins. TrueSpace7 introduces the use of VBScript and JScript as scripting tools for developing plugins and interactive scenes. Capabilities of the software include creating visualizations and animations with realistic lighting (through the use of radiosity, HDRI and Global Illumination) and organic modelling using NURBS, subdivision surfaces and metaballs. Currently TrueSpace has two native internal rendering engines and also support for DX9 pixel shader output quality images alongside the traditional style Render engines. These engines are: LightWorks (from LightWork Design Ltd) and VirtuaLight. TrueSpace7 also introduces support for the VRay rendering engine developed by the Chaos Group. There are a lot of features that are designed to create first class results - Rendering: LightWorks 7.4 rendering engine, Vray Rendering Engine (for TrueSpace7 versions only), VirtuaLight rendering engine, Real-time DX9-based photorealistic engine, HDRI, Caustics, Multi-pass Rendering for Lightworks rendering engine with output to Photoshop layers integrated into TrueSpace7, Hybrid radiosity, ray tracing, Phong shading, Image-based lighting, Non-linear tone mapping editor, Post process editor, Advanced shaders (color, reflectance, transparency, displacement, background, foreground, post processing), Volumetric, Anisotropic reflectance; Surfacing: DX9 (SL2.0) pixel shaders and HLSL editing, Procedural shaders editable in Link Editor, Normal mapping, Shader trees, Modeless UV Editor, Advanced UV Editor with real time UV mapping controls, Unwrapper with Slice, Breaking and welding of vertices in a UV map etc. These are just a small part of the arsenal that is endowed trueSpace7.6. I can say that this software is situated in the same position with Autodesk 3ds Max, LightWave 3D and Rhino. 100% professional with exceptional results. I strongly recommend you to visit their website - www.caligari.com - for more details. Also here you will find the manual (in PDF) plus a whole range of video tutorials. As a tip, do not hesitate and download PDF manual, video tutorials and DX Free Shaderpack of graphic designer Marcel Barthel (http://www.caligari.com/store/trueSpace/default.asp?SubCate=S2truespace&Cate=Store). From now on you will not be stressed by the use of such monstrosities - Blender, K-3D, Moonlight3D, Wings and other such products which give only headaches and poor results. No more call to open source software series - now all those who want a truly professional program have TrueSpace7.6! Thanks both to the Caligari - for the quality of this software, but also those of Microsoft to make this decision!
