Editors’ Review
Tag&Rename is a powerful shareware MP3 tag editor and file renamer with many more features than most similar tools, including some very capable standalone freeware and media players with built-in tag editors. Version 3.8.3 adds Discogs authorization support and improved freedb integration.
Tag&Rename offers a range of features that make managing your music straightforward. You can edit music tags individually or in batches, which saves time if you have a lot of music. The program also updates tags automatically by connecting to online databases. This helps ensure your music metadata is always up to date without you having to do much.
Tag&Rename can rename music files and folders based on the information in the tags. This means your music files are not only well-organized but also easier to find. Tag&Rename also supports Unicode, which is important because it allows the software to display all file names and tags correctly, even in different languages.
The software can also pull in necessary data like titles, lyrics, and cover art automatically from online sources such as Amazon and Discogs. This enriches your music files, making them more complete and detailed. Furthermore, Tag&Rename lets you export this information into formats like XLS, CSV, and HTML, and you can import tags from XLS too. This feature is particularly useful if you like to keep backups of your music metadata or need to transfer it to other systems.
Pros
- Shell integration: Enabling shell menu integration during setup lets you open Tag&Rename from right-click menus in Windows. Like all setup choices, you can change it later in the extensive Program Options.
- Many tags: Tag&Rename supports many more tags than most built-in tag editors, including not only common tags like Composer and Conductor but also many unusual tags such as Bit rate, Encoded by, Remixed by, and Initial Key.
- File Mask Editor: The Get Tags From File Names tab's Mask Editor includes numerous variables like Album, Year, Track, Comment, Release Time, and Mood. Click More Variables for additional options.
- Amazon Web Service: Amazon Web Service users can configure their own account under Program Options: Advanced.
Cons
- Busy and wordy: Some of Tag&Rename's setup options need clearer explanations (we chose defaults). A busy layout needs streamlining; for example, tabs like "Get Tags from File Names" could be shortened.
Price pressure:
Capable freeware leaves you more money for more music.
Bottom Line
Free tag editors are fine for most users, but music lovers with large libraries will find Tag&Rename not only exceptionally useful but surprisingly affordable, too.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Tag&Rename 3.8.3.
