"best of it's kind"

May 28, 2008  |  By trance

 |  Version: Synk Standard 6.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is the most stragitforward, easy and best backup software I have tried.
It even clones signifigantly faster than both superduper and CCC, and produces error free drives, unlike both SD and CCC which I have to fix with diskwarrior and every run.
The only problem is that it leaves some folders visible on the destination disk which should be invisible.
And it's a little expensive too imo, considering Time Machine is free.

"Stay away from this software!"

March 11, 2008  |  By arrakis2

 |  Version: Synk Standard 6.3.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I use to really like this software for it's simplicity and reliability.
But since version 6 I've only had troubles.
I guess it's fine if you have a very simple backup setup.
But I'm backing over a network to different machines every time I check if everything is ok I found out that the backups were running for 2-3 days and then stopped for unknown reason.
I'm having this troubles on different machines and networks.

And now, what made me really give up on this software:
Yesterday my Mac OSX server ran out of space on the system drive! 0kb left on a 350Gb HDD!
I only have the system installed and a couple of extra applications.
After searching for a while, I found out that Synk has created a log file of more than 300Gb hidden in the invisible /var folder.

So I'm switching to Synchronize Pro today hoping to have a better user experience.

Thanks.

"Getting better and better"

September 07, 2007  |  By Jay

 |  Version: Synk Standard 6.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The best backup app out there has finally matured! This version has no bugs that I'm aware of. After my first backup with this new version there were still lots of "conflicts" (most of which made no sense to me), but since my second beckup the conflicts have disappeared. And it's fast too. I think the developer has come into his own. I can finally trash SuperDuper.

"It simply didn't work; kept failing / erroring"

December 05, 2006  |  By Macspudster

 |  Version: Synk Standard 6.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Synk Standard simply keeps failing. Alot of errors, such as 'Item Vanished". The Help states: A file or folder seen during scanning or preview has disappeared during execution of the script. This error usually occurs because the user changed the contents of a folder while Synk is working on it. Try the following: Do not change any of the folders Synk is working on while it is running. --- Thing is, I ain't doing a darn thing to the 'puter 'cept watching it run/backup. I've given Synk root access, too. Glad there is a trial period before I *sinked* any money. Consider renaming the app to Stynk...

"Works great, excellent archiving feature"

November 30, 2006  |  By fredfass

 |  Version: Synk Standard 6.0.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I never wanted to be a collector of backup programs but I that's what I've become -- I must have about 8 programs that I've tried or used over the years. Synk (standard, or middle, version) is finally what I've been seeking: an intuitive, stable, fast, easy-to-use backup program with a fantastic archiving feature. My prior program of choice was Tri-Backup 4, and that has a decent archiving feature and worked OK, though it seemed to not backup all of my updated data files, and it's not a Universal app (proud owner of a Mac Pro). The developers of Synk clearly put their minds and passion into this app and I think it shows: it looks great and functions great.

"Now Synk is better than SuperDuper!"

October 26, 2006  |  By Jay

 |  Version: Synk 6.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Before my review, one note: The download link here on VersionTracker is incorrect (it downloads the old version, 5.2.3). To get any of the 3 versions of Synk -- Backup, Standard, or Pro 6.0.2 -- you must go to their website at http://www.decimus.net/, which is not the website linked on VersionTracker.

I used to use Synk 5 to do backups because it was one of the simplest backup apps available, but then I found out that SuperDuper! makes bootable backups so I've been using that for the last 6 months (it's also very simple to use). But SuperDuper!'s incremental backups were quite slow, often taking 50 minutes or more. So when I heard that this new version (Synk Backup 6.0.2) also does bootable backups I decided to give it a try. The first complete backup (to a balnk Firewire disk) went without a hitch. It took around four hours to backup the 56 GB of data on my disk. Then I started up from my cloned backup Firewire disk with no problems! Then I changed back to my regular disk and moved a few files around and Synked again to see how fast Synk's ZeroScan technology is compared to SuperDuper!, and Iâ??m pleased to say that it was CONSIDERABLY faster (only taking about 20 minutes). The only problem was that each time, after the scan was complete, the app said (in the space above the log) that â??There were 0 warningsâ??, but in the log it listed 1 warning on the first backup and 12 warnings on the second (all from "Conflicts in files"), so thereâ??s a little glitch there. Anyway, the app is much better than version 5, and I think also better and faster at incremental backups than SuperDuper!, which is saying a lot. And my experience with the developer has always been outstanding -- Ben is very fast to respond and quite helpful. All in all a great app.

"Works great, but what happened to moving files to..."

January 26, 2006  |  By Jay

Summary

...trash?
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have always loved this app ever since Ben Rister gave me an educational lisence over a year ago. I particularly liked that there was a setting (when backing up) to move old files in the destination to the trash, that way I could see what was being dumped. I love the new version, but it seems that this feature is now gone, though I could just be stupid.

"*Not* crashing on any size job"

January 26, 2006  |  By LarMatre

 |  Version: Synk 5.2b4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
There's an old business adage that has always stayed with me:

"If there's something about my product (or service) you are not satisfied with, please tell me ... if you are satisfied, please tell others."

This seems like a reoccurring issue on Version Tracker (like matthias3's comment below). If you experience something that is not satisfactory with any app (especially when the majority report no problems), give the developer a chance to support his (or her) product. If they don't respond, or just don't care, then it's fair game.

As a Mac consultant, I know that the majority of Mac users don't have a clue what permissions are, or steps that should be taken for regular maintenance, OS upgrades, etc. Without any details about the set-up that matthias3 has, how can a developer assist, or a user find any value in his comment. To me, it seems like a knee-jerk reaction that has no credibility.

I believe sites like VT are meant to provide useable information to other potential customers (like you and me) and the developers (like Ben Rister). For me, Sync has never crashed and always seem to be quick. I've used it on a G4 iBook with 1.25GB RAM and 10.4.4, and on G5 'Dualie' with 4GB RAM and 10.4.4. Quick and easy ... exactly how I like my apps and my, well, you know... ;)
