Editors' Review

Soda PDF is an intuitive app for opening, creating, and editing PDF documents.

Pros

Modular format: You only install the modules you require, such as those needed to create PDFs or add password protection to PDFs, so you only pay for necessary features.

Quick launch: Soda loads all of its components very quickly.

Professional interface: The interface is professional looking and easy to navigate. It fits right in with Microsoft or Adobe software.

Cons

Lengthy installation: If the installation wasn't lengthy enough, the progress on the main application had to reach 100 percent twice before completion. In addition, the installation has an "express" install that includes a third-party toolbar, and you have to select a custom installation to avoid it.

Bottom Line

Soda PDF excels in affordability and usability. You're able to custom build a PDF solution to suit your needs, and the results are excellent.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Soda PDF 6.4.08.18629.

"Hard to start"

May 29, 2015  |  By oneota--2008

 |  Version: Soda PDF 7.1.06.21314

Pros

Once I finally found where SODA was hidden on my computer screen, it coverted quickly.

After each aborted conversion , a second try has always worked.

Cons

I downloaded SODA after some fiddling but had no idea where it was or how to find it to use it. Given their big "intuitive" hype, it was really aggravating. About one out of three attempts to convert aborts.

SODA guarantees an answer to questions within 48 hours. I haven't gotten a response, and it's been four days.

There's a whole bunch of unclear text on the SODA pages, some of it is ads, the rest is?

"Much Adieu About Nothing"

January 16, 2015  |  By ganerd

 |  Version: Soda PDF 7.1.05.21089

Pros

can read a pdf, but so can 50 other aps with half the memory overhead.

Cons

1. It is just all glitter, and will not even edit my own pdf ?
2. For just a reader, TOO much overhead. and want to install the crap even on your browser?
3. IT IS ALL ADVERTIZEMENTS for their "pro product" ... or ADWARE!

Summary

Not worth the download.

"Why does CNET give this a good review? Worthless junk!"

January 04, 2015  |  By jtimothy

 |  Version: Soda PDF 7.1.05.21089

Pros

It does give you the ability to edit PDF file text. It's slow and clunky, but it works.

Cons

I bought this to be able to convert PDFs to MS Word and MS Excel docs. I tried the PDF > Word conversion and got basically a blank page. I tried the PDF > Excel conversion and it generated an XML doc (not an XLS), and that XML doc could not be converted into an XLS doc. As far as conversion to HTML, of course, totally useless.

Summary

I bought this program (Soda PDF Pro 5) primarily on the recommendation of the CNET editors' 4-star review. After this experience, I have to wonder what is going on at CNET. Are software companies able to buy good reviews from CNET? Just asking the question.

"As a free viewer/creator, lots of aggravating oddities."

November 23, 2014  |  By DoctorQuality

 |  Version: Soda PDF 7.0.16.20136

Pros

I used the free View & Create modules of Soda 7, and while this product is very well thought out, offers many smooth features and appears to be coded very tightly & professionally, I found enough minor oddities to cause me to de-install it.

Cons

Installs toolbar in all Microsoft products, no psuedo-printer (like PrimoPDF), forced to open useless online account, doesn't accept acall correctly passed to it by certain other products, no "auto-align image

Summary

I used the free View & Create modules of Soda, and while this product is very well thought out, offers many smooth features and appears to be coded very tightly & professionally, I found enough minor oddities to cause me to de-install it. (1) It installs a toolbar into every Microsoft application you own whether you like it or not. They cannot be rearranged, repositioned or customized in any way. Well you can do it, but next session they just re-emerge as originally installed. I eventually found the Soda file to delete to stop this from occurring in Word (and had to use Word to disable the addin), but when I deleted the Soda file that creates the Excel toolbar, it negatively impacted Excel and Excel files. I had to do a restore rollback to recover from all that. (2) It does not install a pseudo-printer (like PrimoPDF) so you can't, say, pull down the Print menu while using Firefox and use Print to create a PDF file. You would have to save the HTML file, then open it with Soda, then convert it to a PDF using Soda. It does install what LOOKS LIKE a pseudo-printer that appears in the Printers drop-down, but it doesn't actually do anything except create a file with an odd extension that Soda won't actually open/read. (3) Soda comes with an online equivalent of its Soda software and you are forced to open an account at the website. The account is tied to your email address and, once set, cannot be changed. I ran into issues where I was expected to logon to the online site in order to just open & use the actual software product. (4) The PrimoPDF program cannot properly call Soda to view the PDFs that PrimoPDF generates. There's a glitch in Soda in that it crashes if it is passed (from PrimoPDF) a file/folder name that contains any spaces. (5) Soda does not apparently offer an "auto-align image" function ? unless you purchase the Editing module. I needed it as my scanner bar is slightly out of alignment. (6) It installed a Firefox add-on titled PDF Creator 1.0. I couldn't figure out what it was for and it offered no Options or Uninstall buttons either. The user is allowed to Disable it ? but what it is actually doing? In the Firefox AddIn store, there's another Soda Creator product with a different version number. I installed it but I can't figure out what it's doing either, though it looks to appear to somehow offer the same services that the online website offers. (7) It has a Recent Documents area that never forgets documents unless they are deleted, one at a time. It also doesn't seem to be willing to forget recent folders opened. (8) For a PDF viewer, it takes way too long to open up than Adobe Reader or Foxit. There is no way to turn off Soda side and top panels when being used as a viewer, consuming screen space needlessly. And most of the functionality being offered in those panels actually relate to other paid modules such as Editor. Again, appears to be overall an excellent product, especially if you spend a lot of time creating and manipulating PDFs, (i.e., Edit, OCR, merging/splitting). But as just a viewer/creator, I ran into enough oddities as described above that I ended up abandoning the product.
