Editors' Review

Snagit is a powerful screen capture tool that offers more than the standard built-in options with most versions of Windows, all while allowing a greater deal of customization and editing after you've snapped your images. It's a perfect tool for anyone who regularly compiles tutorials or creates reviews of Web sites or software.

Pros

Exceptional range of customizable tools: Snagit offers a number of powerful tools, including hot key commands, customizable screen range and capture setting, and even smart-lock to determine what part of a screen to capture. You can snap a window, a form in a window, and even a menu drop down for that window, all with quick settings that appear from the software's drop down.

Edit and save images quickly: Every image you snap goes to a central folder, but at any time you can open an editing interface that allows you to crop, resize, rotate, or otherwise edit images before saving them in the format of your choice. You can also see exactly how much space is being used by these images, and cycle through the different dates on which you capture images -- all in a very smooth, streamlined interface.

Cons

Can be overwhelming for basic tasks: If all you want to do is capture an image on the screen, the Windows 7 and 8 snip tool is probably plenty for you. Snagit can feel a bit overwhelming in some settings, throwing videos, help tips, and excess menus out, even for basic tasks. That, along with the somewhat intrusive quick bar can cause problems if all you want are some basic screen captures.

Bottom Line

For power users who frequently need to take specific screen shots, Snagit is a great tool and worth the price after your 30-day free trial expires. Check it out.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Snagit 12.0
