This interesting screensaver doubles as a science experiment. SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home) uses the idle time of hundreds of thousands of computers to analyze data about radio or light signals emanating from the vicinity of 30,000 sunlike stars that might indicate intelligent life.
The analysis of the data results in a colorful readout on your desktop, with graphs as well as status displays of your computer's part in the project. The graphics don't move, so you might want to set your monitor to power down after a certain amount of time. The allure, of course, is that your computer may be the one to finally make contact with other life forms. Whether the project succeeds or not, this screensaver provides some nice-looking graphics, a way to get involved in science, and a great conversation starter when others look at your desktop.

It automatically sets to 100% cpu and "allow new tasks" wich deters people from using. BUT not impossible to configure.
Summary
Simply select - project commands - under projects and click "no new tasks" wich will stop MORE from adding automaticly, if you already have one or more working, just individually select them and abort.
Another big tip, go to the tools menu and select -computing preferences- and lower the max CPU to 20% instead of 100% (default) hopefully people change their mind once they read this. -

I tried down;loading this program several over a weeks period.It always times out, I never had a chance to use it. i even went to the home page to try to download it and the same thing happened.Thisi s the only program I have had trouble downloading.Very disappointing.

ok guys i loaded it up and it will tax you cpus and temps..get the program from seti at home and go to the preferances..all you have to do is turn things down and temps will drop back to normal mine only runs 10 to 15 degrees warmer than normal. if you dont it can skyrocket you temps and cpu cycle times..be smart and back it down and you will have a nice little program and it will connect to server easyer..i have no problem with mine and run it all day long

I have had this program running for 24 hours straight. There has been no issues with over-heating of my computer. My computer was built from scratch so that may or may not be the reason. The program is intensive as far as needing computing power but i'm still able to surf the web while SETI@home is running.

All statements are to the "T". I tried this bugger years ago and thought my AMD 1.4 was going to fry! Anyway folks, "They" are allready here.
