This straightforward utility easily protects files and folders, but a security flaw reduces our initial enthusiasm. Protect Folder Plus's interface, with well-labeled buttons and a list of protected items, proves very easy to use. It requires a password to secure files and folders and includes a browser, but it also supports the simpler drag-and-drop method for adding files and folders to be protected. Unlike similar applications, four access modes are offered, including Read Only, Browse Only, and No Access, and restrictions are instantly applied. Configurable hot keys are welcome shortcuts for accessing the program, and enabling and disabling protection. Impressively, files and folders are completely hidden in No Access mode and can't be found in Windows Explorer or through searches. Protect Folder Plus also thwarts attempts to remove protection by terminating the program in the Task Manager, and file and folder security remains tight. Furthermore, you have to supply the password to uninstall the program. However, in testing, we managed to remove file and folder restrictions and uninstall the program while running Windows in Safe Mode. Protect Folder Plus almost hits the right notes, but its security flaw won't protect your important information from a determined computer-savvy intruder.
