Editors' review

This file-archive utility's strong feature set and impressive flexibility make it a reasonable substitute for the ubiquitous WinZip. PowerArchiver supports several compression formats, including the new 7-Zip format, which offers extremely high compression ratios. You also can encrypt your archives using one of five secure algorithms. The configuration menu lets you customize almost every feature, including a password manager for encrypted archives, a self-extracting wizard, and an autobackup tool. The batch ZIP tool compresses hundreds of files in one shot, and the multiextract tool unpacks hundreds of archives at once. The program works swiftly and reliably and now supports unlimited-size ZIP archives and full-program skinning. Anyone who needs to work with archive files will find PowerArchiver a versatile, affordable alternative.

    "All the features you need"

    December 08, 2013   |   By Randy Bell

    Version: PowerArchiver 2013 14.01.06

    Pros

wil open all the archive formats you the user can possibly come across. PA has improved in speed of opening and extraction. Versatile, plenty of choices to customize compression levels, etc.

    Cons

none, unless you want something free

    Summary

A friend on an online Security Forum introduced me to this product years ago; and I've used it ever since. Compares favorably to the other major products in this category: WinZip, WinRar, etc. Has all the features you the user could want, and then some. Updated often, with a very active community of users. PA has its own forum; the developers seem very committed to constant improvement of this product: seeking to improve opening speed; speed of extraction; shell integration; even integration with the ftp protocol, and your email client. Highly recommend.

"TOP OF THE LINE ARCHIVE PROGRAM"

    March 29, 2013   |   By OmegaParticle

    Version: PowerArchiver 2012 13.02.02

    Pros

This application isn't one of the best.. It is the BEST!.. and why?

Well, unlike other archive applications out their such as WinZip, Stuffit, WinRAR etc the developers have focused on compatibility, regular updates based on users feedback and recently security , backup , FTP and now cloud compatibility.

    Cons

The biggest con is users who feel the need to wine over issues they experience. But they don't mention that the support is excellent, you have a open forum with dozens of skilled PA users willing to help and the developers are also contactable directly via the support page.

PA has a Registry backup tool that you can save your settings and configurations it also act's as a support measure allow the developers to review any issues that you are having.

    Summary

PowerArchiver is a fantastic tool with regular updates and a fantastic communication between user and developer.

If I were to say anything is that these guys have a clear goal to make PA the best tool for the job.

"Does everything you need from an archive program."

    June 05, 2011   |   By geezman

    Version: PowerArchiver 2010 11.71

    Pros

Has tons of supported formats and it compresses/decompresses them quickly. I also love the burner and iso virtual drive features of the Pro version. I have been a user since 2007 and has never caused me any problems. It just works!

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    "Kind of misbehaved"

    March 11, 2011   |   By timm73

    Version: PowerArchiver 2010 11.71

    Pros

    Wide range of formats.

    Cons

This program completely ignored my custom setup specs. It associated itself with every compression format plus, image files, cdrom image files, audio files, need I go on? It seemed like it associated with every zip extension and every open extension.

    Summary

This program might be good. I'm not going to review it in my current mood, having to repair so many associations. My image viewer crashes now and I'm having issues with my burner app, so I guess I'll be reinstalling that. I have a masters in programming, so I'm quite aware of the (absent minded) error her. Hope it isn't a sign.

"His name tells everything! Right stuff!"

    July 07, 2010   |   By Blade10X

    Version: PowerArchiver 2010 11.62.04

    Pros

Powerful! Real flock of features and many additional features. Options you won't find in regular archivers. High quality acrhiver.

    Cons

Nothing, except very boring nag screen which tells you about the licence status when you open the program.

    Summary

If i'd knew before, instead of WinRAR i'll rather use PowerArchiver. He's way much more powerful and featurefull than WinRAR.

"They ARE getting their act together"

    March 13, 2010   |   By UProf

    Version: PowerArchiver 2010 11.62.04

    Pros

Great product; lots of features, and now, at least for now, flawless execution. They have been far more cautious before releasing versions. That is a huge plus. If they continue on this trajectory, it will be merit 5 stars . . . easily.

    Cons

    none right now.

    I spoke too quickly.

There are still a number of quirks with the software. And they are busy developing new features before getting the ones they have fixed.

One of their bloggers also occasionally gets snarky with people who lament PA's problems.

So . . . sigh . . . I am going to have to permanently go back to WinZip. WZ is too expensive (since being purchased by Corel); it lacks features it really should have. However, I never once had the kinds of problems that regularly plague PowerArchiver.

Such a waste of a potentially fine product.

    "Tremendous potential, mostly unrealized"

    October 22, 2009   |   By UProf

    Version: PowerArchiver 2010 11.60

    Pros

Nice appearance; fast compression and extraction

    Cons

Unreliable. Sloppy. They count on forum members and users to do their work for them. They release versions with problems even a modestly cautious programmer should catch. If you complain, they fix the problems; they may also introduce new ones.

    Summary

If they ever get their act together, watch out. They will take the archive market by storm. But if the continue to prematurely release their product, they will turn users off. I have a lifetime subscription, so I am sure I will give it a shot sometime in the future.; But after four months of trying, I still cannot count on it working correctly. So I reluctantly purchased an upgrade to WinZip 14. I would love to leave WZ, but PA just doesn't make that feasible.

    "TONS OF POTENTIAL; SLOPPY EXECUTION"

    October 01, 2009   |   By UProf

    Version: PowerArchiver 2010 11.50

    Pros

It is fast; it has an attractive layout; when they work, it has tons of bells and whistles.

    Cons

They continually put out buggy versions of the products and toss fixes together prematurely, without really checking them out. If you complain they may fix a problem in one version only to have it reappear in the next.

    Summary

If they would take more care before they release their products, they could absolutely dominate the archive market. If everything worked as it should its the best thing out there. On the other hand, it does not matter how good it could be in principle if the user can never count on it working correctly. They are shooting themselves in the proverbial foot.

It is not that they miss minor glitches (although if the forums are correct, they do that too); the botch some essential features.

Recently they added a more user-friendly way to add files to a backup script. It would be great except for one thing. Even if you check the box that would shot system and hidden files . . . they don't show. They missed this in one version and then didn't fix it in the most recent version either.

    Updated on Oct 15, 2009

Two more updates; the same problems remain. Double sigh. I removed the software from my system.
