Small and medium-size businesses do all kinds of different things, but one thing they have in common is they're in business. Something else they have in common is payrolls. Meeting them, managing them, recording them -- no wonder so many business owners and accountants always seem worried! It's a lot of responsibility. Payroll Mate 2013 from Real Business Solutions can help. It handles just about every part of the payroll process except providing the actual pay (sorry -- that one's still yours!) for a reasonable price. It can prepare payrolls, calculate taxes and withholding, print paychecks, create and export reports and data to a variety of databases and document types, and process forms, including W-2s and federal forms (and even some state forms, too). Payroll Mate is free to try for 30 days -- plenty of time to see if it's what your business needs. The latest release is fully compatible with Windows 8.
As with many proprietary business tools, Payroll Mate's user interface offers its own take on the basic Explorer-style layout, with multipurpose sidebars and toolbars as well as menu bars that borrow touches from Web browsers. Payroll Mate opened with the Checks form displayed and pre-filled with sample data for a fictitious employee, "George B. Orange." Other buttons configure and manage data for Employees, Forms, Reports, Company, and Vendor Center, but we could add custom buttons easily, too. In fact, most of Payroll Mate can be customized to suit your business. We probably should have mentioned this earlier, but Payroll Mate has plenty to offer on its Help menu, too, including a Help Manual with lots of specific information (like Clergy Payroll, for instance) as well as an entire submenu of Helpful Resources such as a Quick Start Guide and instructions for using W-2s and other forms.
Overall, we were impressed with Payroll Mate 2013's ability to simplify a lot of complex processes. For example, toolbar buttons labeled Print Selected Check and Print Multiple Checks leave little room for guessing.

I paid extra for California forms...when opened...they said they don't support California forms...also many of the information boxes have sections missing and the help information is also of little value.
I have used C-Net Reviews many times...with excellent results...but -
They should stick to hardware reviews..This piece of crap is not worthy of one star and it receives five stars...I'm much more upset with the way off the mark C-Net review than I am about way overpaying for a worthless overpriced product. -

I used this software as a replacement for quickpayroll which got discontinued..I can't say payroll mate had everything I needed, but I was able to customize it to fit my requirements.was able to create my own tax and deduction types which is great.
Cons
export to quicken is not available in the 2009 version, it's available in the 2010 one. BTW I had to go to payroll mate website to download a demo for 2010, not sure when this will be available on download.com.

I use MSOA (Microsoft Accounting) and I had to find a payroll software last month after payroll for office accounting from ADP got discontinued. For $99, Payroll Mate was perfect for our small company.
Cons
I would like to see the ability to interface with EFTPS added to the software.

Easy and affordable.I was able to setup my company, add my employees and print checks in less than an hour. I paid $99 and it covers my whole year.

I wish the software had employee time tracking built in. The tech support guy said they will consider it.

"DEMO, not try before you buy"

The user interface isn't horrible.

It's a DEMO, so it's really useless if you don't buy it. After painstakingly putting in all my info, I discovered it would not actually print checks or paystubs. Also does not calculate local taxes. Minimal customization ability.
Summary
Avoid wasting your time like the 6 hours I wasted using this piece of junk. I hate Intuit and all their bloatware products but they seem to be the only viable option if you actually want to do work. Was very disappointed as I have been a big proponent of shareware and freeware for 20+ years.
