"Did not work with my system"

    June 29, 2010  |   By Sattamander

    Version: POPFile 1

    Pros

    Free that's about it

    Cons

    Doesn't work with Hotmail

    Summary

not recommended for most major email systems. If it does work with them they sure don't give you any instructions on HOW to make it work

"Effectively manage your Emails and cull out your spam."

    August 18, 2009  |   By jesharp

    Version: POPFile 1

    Pros

It is smart software that you teach to classify your Emails. After a few weeks, it is almost infallible. It runs unobtrusively in the background. It places user-supplied words in the subject line that your Email handler can use to sort or delete.

    Cons

After years of use I have found no cons. It takes some attention at first, but it is truly worth it in the long run.

    Summary

The program allows you to set up the categories that you want your mail divided into. It places a [Keyword] in the subject line identifying the category. At first, everything get identified to the default category. You have to manually reclassify the entries. As new mail comes in the program uses what you have taught it to classify the new mail automatically. The more mail it gets and the more you teach it, the smarter it gets. My wife and I have used this for years, and we now might reclasssify two or three emails a year. You can set up your mail handler to sort your mail by directory based on the [keyword], if any, that it finds in the subject line. More importantly, you can have it simply delete any mail containing the keyword [Spam] from the server and you never see it. I don't recommend doing this until it has been on the job for 6 months or so.

    "Very good so far"

    May 19, 2008  |   By stevenhs

    Version: POPFile 1

    Pros

I've been running POPFile for just a few days now. After I re-classifying the first 18 items (about 12 legit and 6 spam) that were "unclassified," POPFile hasn't misclassified a single item since (about 60 mail messages). I am impressed!

    Cons

Installation wasn't so easy. There are many potential issues. I would not suggest POPFile for the computer illiterate.

"A program I can count on."

    April 27, 2008  |   By kurfess

    Version: POPFile 1

    Pros

The self learning aspect of POPFile. It keeps updating itself on your individual likes and dislikes.

    Cons

It adds a noticible delay in mail download time, but it's worth it.

"Fine if you want to have yet another application running"

    October 3, 2007  |   By Mysticlv

    Version: POPFile 0.21.2

    Pros

The program seems to work fairly well. However, it runs resident (Which I don't care for) and is just another application that is waiting to be used. I found it easy to train and effective at blocking, but it just was not what I was looking for. If you have your E-mail open all the time you are on line then this is the program for you. If you want something that runs only when you are doing E-mail then look elsewhere. Works alright for what it is.

    Cons

Another running process to help eat up system resources. Would be great if it were more of a plug-in and not an actual program. Website is somewhat confusing with it's layout. Setup and training is geared more towards an experienced user.

    "Spam gone!"

    September 12, 2007  |   By wrc555

    Version: POPFile 0.21.2

    Pros

I found this quick and easy to install, and it has cut my spam levels down to very near zero. As I receive in excess of 500 emails a day, I do spend quite some time checking through the POPFile mail history for false positives, but as it learns more and more about my email, these are now very, very rare.

    Cons

    None!

"This is last anti spam pgm you will ever need !"

    September 10, 2007  |   By Microwave

    Version: POPFile 0.21.2

    Pros

I have used many anti-spam pgms and didnt have much sucess. Now all that has changed with POPFile. This is very easy to use software and after a few days of "learning" it will do the job you want. If you are a "geek" you can do use many different apps to achieve your perfect setup. This software is much better than the paid for programs I have used.So if your tired of all tha SPAM B.S. trey this software today........what do you have to lose ?.............S P A M thats what , have fun.

    "I am impressed by POPFile"

    August 14, 2007  |   By joeres

    Version: POPFile 0.21.2

    Pros

I am using POPfile for about 14 days now! In that period the recognition of Spam by POPFile improved dramatically. After resetting the counter 3 times I have now 100% spyware recognition for 3 days. I think a 100% recognition of SPAM in time by POPFile is not an illision!! I recieve lots of email and lots of spam. This is the best SPAMFIGHTER ever!! Thank you very very much!

    Version: POPFile 0.21.2

    Pros

it does its job well. after testing many free programs I am running this one now for half a year. and it's getting better after every training.

    Cons

I took me some time to understand and manage it correctly. there is no possibility to delete mails with unwanted keywords directly.
