Talk about an omnivore's dilemma. Although OmniFormat converts files among more than 75 formats, it turned in a less-than-stellar performance in our tests. It often output blank images and crashed when trying to convert large DOC files. The recognition quality of its OCR module was poor, even with the easiest texts. Potentially most frustrating of all, it actually overwrote the original files when converting. This isn't a bug, by the way, but a deliberate, if inexplicable, decision on the part of the designers. OmniFormat also occasionally pops up ads. Give it this, though: it's a snap to use. You simply choose folders to monitor and select the output format. Whenever a file appears in one of the monitored folders, the program automatically converts it. To our minds, that convenience doesn't make up for OmniFormat's many flaws. We'd suggest steering clear, at least for now.Publisher's description

Version: OmniFormat 7.9
"The bottom of the bucket. Worst of the Worst."
Pros: Nothing.
Cons: This program is SO FULL of ads, popups, and self-promotions that it nearly crashed my computer.
No "uninstall" so you have to do it manually.
I regret downloading this program.
It is the WORST!!

Version: OmniFormat 7.9
Cons: Not able to use the program due to so many explorer windows opening for adverts. The number reached 75 windows open after I had closed many of them. It also disabled windows task manager.

Version: OmniFormat 7.9
"Excellant, did exactly what I wanted"
Pros: I had to convert over 40,000 email in mhtml format to PDF. Omniformat did the job, just point it to the directory and let it run.
Supports a very large selection of file types.
Very robust, I had it running for a couple of days straight with no problem.

"This would be great if it worked properly"
Cons: 1. Bit of a pain to install - you have to install pdf995, but there are several pdf995 components and it wasn't clear to me which ones I needed to download and install;
2. Operation was odd - you have to tell Omniformat to scan a folder - when it picks up the format you want to convert, it does the conversion and destroys the original. Why not have at least the option for a nice straightforward drag'n'drop 'Just convert this one file please'? (If there was this option, I missed it.)
3. The clincher - when I converted a pdf advert into an image file, it did it but shunted some of the lettering around so it looked like it had been assembled by a talented baboon. Not helpful! Uninstalled it about 20 minutes after getting to 'work'.

"Converts PDF to GIF quickly and conveniently."
Pros: This program converts PDF to GIF quickly and conveniently. It's a little unusual and you have to make very sure that you don't give it your only copy of something but, once you know how to use it properly, it works well.
Cons: Why oh why did they have to design it to overwrite the original file?
