"Something simple and cheap, just what I needed."

    February 15, 2010   |   By JohnJon102

    Version: NTI Shadow 4.1.0.23

    Pros

    VERY reliable!
    FAST!
very easy to install no files to move around, no registry files to modify, install and go!
    great graphical interface.

    Cons

I have been using it for a month and no apparent problems have surfaced...

    Summary

I normally use the software that comes with the computer, but after having numerous problems with it I decided to take the plunge and spend a very affordable 40 bucks. worth every penny.

    "Decent product, company sucks"

    January 29, 2008   |   By Allan Marcus

    Version: NTI Shadow 3.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I purchased and used Shadow 2 and then upgraded to Shadow 3. I recently reinstall the OS to get a fresh start with Leopard. I downloaded the latest version of NTI Shadow, installed it, and tried to enter my serial number. Shadow didn't accept it. I contacted support their reply is below.

Basically, they make you use a serial number, then they break the serial number with an update, then they make you buy a new one! No other company in the world does this! Every other company I have ever gotten a serial number for will gladly resolve a reinstall issue. To make it worse, this is backup software!

There are so many other good back up programs out there (CCC for example, which is free), there is NO REASON to waste your money on this NTI product. Assuming they are just as obnoxious with their other products, I recommend avoiding this company at all costs.

    Dear Allan,

I am really sorry but there is not much else I can do. Did you save your
original installation file which worked with that serial number before? It
doesn't make much sense that it worked before but no longer works now. It's
important to save all program installation files that are purchased and
downloaded from the internet. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience but
there is not much else I can do to help you. Please understand that we
cannot continue to supply new serial numbers for customer throughout the
years without repurchasing a license. I wish there was more I could do to
help. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns I can
    help you with.

    Have a wonderful week.

"NTI Shadow operates like a \"beta\""

    December 13, 2005   |   By abominus--2008

    Version: NTI Shadow 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The idea of NTI Shadow is a very good one. The world needs a simple yet powerful backup solution like this. But the current implementation is not "trouble-free" and leaves much to be desired. Many people have had success with it for making simple ghost backups, but if you try to use the advanced/timed features it starts getting buggy, inconsistent and unreliable.

A few examples: Some of my backup sets need to be backed up once daily, so I toggle Shadow to check the source folders for changes every 1 DAY. When I look at it later, its set for every 1 MINUTE. No wonder the thing is running all the time.

Trying to add the My Documents folder won't ungrey the "OK" button. You must navigate to it instead, or check another folder on the drive and then uncheck it. Buggy.

There should be a log file so you can see what it has done. This is basic to even the simplest backup program.

There's no checkbox provision to make the program start automatically when the system has rebooted. This is unacceptable for a backup program.

It seems to have problems making timed backups over a network.

NTI is wholly unresponsive where tech support is concerned. Phone message and e-mails go unreturned (if they are overwhelmed they should just say so, and point to a comprehensive FAQ or provide a users forum).

I LOVE the utter simplicity of this program. But "dirt-simple" should also be "dirt-reliable". A low price (or free) doesn't justify shoddy workmanship. But if NTI can fine-tune its operation and performance I'd recommend NTI Shadow in a heartbeat.

    "good program"

    September 24, 2005   |   By kit1

    Version: NTI Shadow 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This works well to back up data on a scheduled basis as short as a few minutes to hours later. It's really great for data that you might want to revert back to later after you have saved something and realize you want an older version. I use it only to back up data and use another program for a full daily backup but you could certainly use it to back up everything. Support from the company is somewhat slow and licencing is strange. I only downgrade the program one star because of the company support.
