Summary
Tried 4 days for my old comp. to recognize the cd-rom player. As a last resort went to this site, downloaded the program, click, click, and now it recognizes my cd-rom player. Just marvelous!

.... this sucks..... screwed up my comp just for downloading it, it screwed up all my dll files for some reason and I had to reinstall windows and use another drive to run the boot disk
