Excellent Mac DVD authoring tool -- very easy to use

Pros
Strongly recommend MovieGate -- an excellent tool for authoring DVDs with menus -- it usually takes me 2 -- 3 minutes to select the video files, edit the menu and start it encoding. I run OS 10.5.6 on a quad-core system and MG takes full advantage.
Cons
The only thing it does is overestimate the encoded video size, but tis doesn't seem to affect the quality.
Summary
Typically, I want to encode and burn .avi source files. MovieGate runs a process for each video file, so that if I'm burning a DVD with 4 videos on it, MovieGate runs 4 processes, taking full advantage of the quad core processor. It is very fast and the quality is excellent. The developer is amazingly responsive, and if I have had any problem he usually comes back with a new beta within a few days. I am currently running a 3.05 beta.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've produced over 30 DVD's using MovieGate V 2.67. First off, it is so much quicker than iDVD (in a direct comparison, MG was produced an image in 8 hours, and iDVD took 16 hours for the same input source). And of course the best thing is that it allows you to make high quality, beautifully produced menus with the freedom to be as creative as you want. I don't even bother with iDVD any more.
The only problems with this version has been that the user interface is not very polished i.e. it could be more intuitive, and this version allows you to produce a DVD without checking to make sure that the menu will actually work (with buttons). In fact, it took me a very long time to figure out why the DVD's produced with MG were crashing my Mac DVD Player, and yet the same videos would play fine in my XBOX and also a PC. I discovered this to be a bug with a peculiar work-around. Hopefully all of these minor issues will be addressed in the newer versions, but still this is a great piece of software and well worth the $20 shareware cost.
Subtitle support is Excellent!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have known about this app for many years but never gave it much thought (aside from the cool icon). I figured that between iDVD and Toast that there was no need for this app. I was wrong. This is the ONLY answer I found that would allow me to create a full 100% top quality DVD with subtitles. Real subs, not hard coded ones. I did need the help of MTR and Cinematize, but it is MovieGate that allows me to create a DVD from a DVD without recoding (i.e. loosing quality), AND still allows me to insert real subtitles! It lets mechange the font, size and location of the subs too. It's great software! I can now make my own high quality DVDs with English subtitles for DVDs that are in a foreign language, and don't come with English subs. Amazing!
Note, VisualHub, Submerge, ffmpegx, Toast, etc. are all great apps, but thay all require reencoding the video to a compressed format (quality loss) in order to do it. MovieGate does not.
Oh yeah, it's stable, cheap, and has a great manual too!
Quartz themes are back.

The only thing I wish this software had was the choice to make DVD menu if you want(even a simple one like toast does). But at least this software support more file types then toast for encoding DVD's and does not crash half way through encoding like toast does for me.
Works great on my Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Contrary to the "WARNING" posted earlier, I had no trouble installing MovieGate on my dual processor PowerMac G5. It does consume a lot of CPU cycles while encoding, but that is to be expected. And since it is using mpeg2enc - a standard Unix package - it consumes no more or less than any other software using mpeg2enc. This is an excellent piece of freeware. The only tip I have is for American users: You will need to go to the preferences pane before you encode your first DVD and change the Video preference from PAL to NTSC. As the author is apparently French, the software as downloaded defaults to PAL. Bon fait monsieur!
