Modern Mix is a tweak for Windows 8 that brings users one step closer to the classic Windows experience inside the Modern UI environment. Stardock's latest release removes the barrier between the Start Screen and desktop by enabling Modern apps to run inside a window. The result is a user experience more in line with the traditional Windows 7 way of displaying windowed applications. Regardless of your feelings about Microsoft's OS, Modern Mix is a utility that is genuinely useful for the desktop dependent.

After installation, you'll be introduced to ModernMix's config menu. By default, any app that you launch from the Start Screen or desktop will now be open in a window. You can change this behavior for both individual launch locations and set ModernMix to launch apps while retaining their last used settings, like window size. If you like the minimal control overlay, ModernMix gives you the option to display or hide modes on the top right corner. If you opt to hide it, the F10 key will toggle between your standard Modern full-screen mode or the classic windowed mode.

Stardock has thoughtfully incorporated many other basic behavioral options. Normally, Windows 8's charms bar acts as your standard app manager for Modern UI apps. ModernMix takes your Modern UI apps and docks them onto the desktop taskbar to further blur the lines between both environments. Another appreciated option is ModernMix's ability to constrain app window sizes; many of the apps available from Microsoft's app store are set at a 768-pixel height or above and aren't meant for scaling down.

In some cases, the windowed experience didn't really end up being the best. Many of Microsoft's apps in Windows 8 are tailored for a full screen experience, so some apps end up being underwhelming at times. This is much more apparent with running games; depending on how you scale the window size; some games like Hydro Thunder, BlazBlue, or Jezzball Galaxy will attempt to scale itself but end up getting cut off at more unconventional resolutions.

Having the option to tweak and mod your computing experience is one of the conveniences of having a PC. If you're still feeling hesitant about making the jump to Windows 8 but feeling left out from the speedy enhancements, then take ModernMix out for a spin and see if you warm up to it. Combined with Start8, ModernMix and Windows 8 just might be the perfect computing cocktail recipe that will finally push some Win7 users over the tipping point to Windows 8.

"Does the Job"

October 28, 2014  |  By pbike908

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.20

Pros

Best feature is it allows one to access the task bar while running modern apps.

I also recommend Start8.

Cons

Doesn't seem to close modern apps properly, but other than leaving the icon in the taskbar it doesn't impact performance or system stability. Some inconsistencies with some modern apps -- especially when opening them and snapping windows. Other than minor cosmetic issues, none of the inconsistencies affect system stability.

"Marginal improvement"

September 08, 2014  |  By imagegroup

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.20

Pros

It opens apps in a reduced window, but...

Cons

Once I try to move or resize the window it defaults to full screen and can not be resized from that point. So as long as i leave the window where it is, I am good. But where it opens is not necessarily where i want it.

Summary

This is only a marginal improvement, but does not solve the main problem of giving me back control of my multitasking workspace in w8.

Well worth the nominal fee.

"Decent, but defeats the purpose one thing"

December 26, 2013  |  By Lesslog

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.12

Pros

More simple to have programs running on your desktop rather than your fullscreen.

Cons

Defeats the purpose in being able to just doing one project, not so good for multitasking.

"Awesome tool but needs a little work"

November 01, 2013  |  By hotboyfred

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.12

Pros

Allows me to have windows 8 apps open in a window that can be sized and moved around on your screen(s).

Cons

I have multiple monitors and if I open the app on the monitor I want and then decide to change to a different monitor and maximize it on the new monitor, the app pops back to the original monitor.

Also, sometimes if you open the app on a monitor of your choosing and you click on another monitor, the app will automatically stop playing or minimize and stop playing.

Summary

A great feature for windows 8. Multiple monitor issues need to be addressed.

"Does what it says it does."

May 15, 2013  |  By Mike Hawthorne

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.05

Pros

Opens Windows Apps in a normal Windows, window.
Makes Windows 8 much easier to use.

Cons

No bad side as far as I can see.

Summary

This is worth the 5 bucks even if you use Classic Shell or an equivalent as I do.

"Brings the Start Screen and Desktop Together"

April 08, 2013  |  By Imogen7Ryan

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.0

Pros

It is great to open Win 8 Apps in a window on the desktop, it doesn't feel like such a separation. I really like that you can pin apps to the task bar. I haven't even fully used all of Modern Mix's features yet, but what I see so far, they have done a cracking job.

Cons

Not really any, but there is always room for improvement as with everything.

Summary

Using Modern Mix WITH the Start Button would lead to an even better Windows 8 user experience. I am yet to try both together but I think I will now especially if Apps can be pinned to the start menu too, then it would be near enough perfect. Good job Stardock!

"Makes Win8 the "Windows we wanted all along.""

April 02, 2013  |  By cdrg

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.0

Pros

Finally make Win8 apps behave as if they're in Win7.
You're never forced to leave "desktop" mode.

Cons

none so far

Summary

After installing Modern Mix plus Start8, Windows 8 finally seems like a true upgrade to Win7. I'm finally rid of the two most annoying things about Windows 8 (the screen-hogging Modern UI plus the absence of the Start menu), and I get to enjoy all of the new and positive aspects of Windows 8 while retaining the familiar look & feel of Windows 7. I tried out a similar program from RetroUI, but IMO it seemed a little buggy and incomplete compared to Stardock's combo of Modern Mix & Start8...you wind up paying twice as much (10 bucks) if you go the Stardock route, but it's well worth it.

"Another "must have" from Stardock for using Windows 8"

April 01, 2013  |  By douglas4y

 |  Version: ModernMix 1.0

Pros

Excellent, excellent, excellent... with Stardock's Start8 app, this is a great solution to being forced to jump around from the Windows 8 Desktop to the Metro page, and back again, constantly. Now can stay mostly on the Win8 desktop, and not have to always see gigantic Metro Apps spanning my entire 27" monitor.

Cons

None I can think of

Summary

(as mentioned, also check out Start8 by Stardock, which helps similarly)
