Editors' review

Medieval CUE splitter is an easy-to-use tool for breaking long audio files into smaller, songlike chunks. It has a simple layout and fast results; its only drawback is the rare CUE file format it uses.

The program's interface is nothing spectacular; in fact, it looks and feels rather sterile. However, its commands are clearly marked, and we had no difficulty navigating it or understanding its controls. This program's biggest problem is that it doesn't support every audio format. While it's compatible with MP3, WAV, and other popular formats, these files need to have a CUE text file embedded within them to work with Medieval CUE splitter. These are more commonly found in long files, such as entire concerts. Once we'd located the appropriate files, the program split the file automatically in a matter of seconds. We were left with a file that was divided equally and that felt much more like the songs on a traditional album. Medieval CUE splitter is flush with special features, though many won't appeal to casual users. However, audiophiles will love the program's ability to adjust specifications such as volume and bit rate. Even though we were disappointed it couldn't work on all audio files, this still seemed like a great program.

Medieval CUE splitter is a freeware. It comes as a compressed file and installs desktop icons without permission. We didn't like the CUE file's limitations, but we thought the program still worked well, and we recommend it.

"The program works as it described - almost"

    February 28, 2014   |   By gabubuxx

    Version: Medieval CUE Splitter 1.2

    Pros

Easy to use, fast, works with many formats

    Cons

Supports only the 16 bit-depths sampling. Asking the author to fix this error doesn't responded either.

"Do not use if you value your data"

    August 14, 2013   |   By temporary2010

    Version: Medieval CUE Splitter 1.2

    Pros

    Fast. Splits image to tracks.

    Cons

    Alters your music/data.

    Summary

As tested by a member of Hydrogen Audio, Medieval Cue Splitter will NOT preserve the integrity of your ripped CDs. I don't think I am allowed to post URLs here, but do a search for "Hydrogen Audio Medieval crapware", and read up on how badly this software will botch up your files.

I recommend using Cuetools (freeware). It takes a bit longer to split/join files, but will do so while preserving the integrity of the data. You can split/rejoin as many times as you want with Cuetools, and the data will still be the exact same! This cannot be said with Medieval, where one split, and your rips because garbage.

    "Only used one time"

    May 09, 2013   |   By achitea

    Version: Medieval CUE Splitter 1.2

    Pros

Performed as advertised and split a long classical piece into its component parts.

    Cons

The component parts were supposed to fade in-out to each other and I instead have silence soft click. I think it is the nature of the source media.

    Summary

    Should do what you want...

    "Worked perfectly"

    April 18, 2012   |   By mmmelaney

    Version: Medieval CUE Splitter 1.2

    Pros

No quality loss. Works perfectly splitting files into the same format of the original.

    Cons

None -- See review by "MobiusPizza" to correct error message if you get one. This would apply to any cue splitting software though.

    Thanks, Medieval!

"The CNET editor doesn't know what he's talking about"

    July 25, 2011   |   By MobiusPizza

    Version: Medieval CUE Splitter 1.2

    Pros

    Free and just works

    Cons

User need to know what cue files are, sometime people put in wrong file names or not altering the cue file, after converting wav to flac, resulting in manual correction required in the file name line in cue.

    Summary

The software does NOT require cue to be embedded in certain formats, it ALWAYS takes separate files.

With the cue file in notepad, the following line must be correct:
    FILE "file name" WAVE
Only file name above need to be correct, along with the extension. The WAVE tag cannot be altered, it does not stand for WAV file, it is how cue was defined.
