    "Definitely for power users only!"

    December 07, 2004   |   By thebrix2004

    Version: Mailsmith 2.1.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Mailsmith is not for everyone. It is expensive, by the standards of most shareware, and wondrously austere - there are no pretty pictures and a lot of words in the user interface and HTML email can be read, not composed. But it is also overwhelmingly powerful; everything is scriptable, filtering is pervasive (any number of filters can be attached to any folder or action) and, most importantly for anyone who deals with occasional computer users, incoming email text can be reformatted and cleaned up in myriad ways thanks to a loan of BBEdit's text processing code. The performance is also excellent; when I got to five-figure email archives on my 12" Powerbook G4 Entourage 2004 started to slow down markedly and become annoying yet Mailsmith just keeps on going with no noticeable decrease in speed. If you receive hundreds or thousands of emails a day Mailsmith is well worth considering; the learning curve is steep but the 200-plus-page user manual is superbly written and the end result worth the effort.

    "Some good ... some bad"

    August 21, 2003   |   By Hangnail--2008

    Version: Mailsmith 2.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Mailsmith has been a love-hate relationship. Usually more love than hate but there are some issues. I'll put them into pluses and minuses:

    Pluses:

    Clean interface
    Better, faster searches
    Integration with Apple address book
    Power of bbedit text editing
    good filtering

    Minuses:

For its simple interface it uses a large memory footprint (double that of Eudora and Eudora has built-in spam filtering)

Although integration with PGP is good, I would prefer the option of PGP or GPG (a minor niggle but digital signatures are becoming more and more important).

IMAP support (most everyone has said this).

No true message threading (not just grouping by subjects). Bare bones says this is in the works.

While its filtering is very good, the filtering actions are not as complete as Eudora's.

While spam sieve is a great product, Eudora's internal Bayesean engine seems to catch more.

    "Poor"

    Version: Mailsmith 2.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Proprietary DB format. No tools to edit them, no way to split or concatenate them.
Heavily overprised as all their products and 13 MB for a lousy mailer, with no filtering, few features, ... Ridiculous.
If we need a separate filter, why shouldn't we use a free one? One that really works fine? Why paying for a less than midrange one?

    "The best"

    Version: Mailsmith 2.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Mailsmith is the best email application out there, period. The clean interface is just the tip of the iceberg that hides incredible power to handle your email. If you thought earlier versions were sluggish, try v.2.0, it's lean and mean. The best support available. This .01 update adds some very nice new features. When Mailsmith adds IMAP it will be the killer app for all your email needs.

    "Great product"

Mailsmith is a great email program. It does all I need to do in the no-nonsense way we're used from BBEdit, with incredible power under the hood. This +0.0.1 update is considerable, with many features and UI improvements (I wish MS would add as much to their programs when they increase the version number by 0.1).

    "Much improved"

    Version: Mailsmith 2.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a great update. I'm still begging for IMAP support, but a lot of my complaints about the point-zero release have been addressed here, including the Apple address book filtering. The changelog is impressive in its length and scope. The application also looks much more polished UI-wise.

Still, I must say it again: My kingdom for IMAP! If you don't require IMAP, this is a great email client.

This is an awesome mail client. It is worth every penny. It is bare bones at its best. If you use their software, this is guaranteed to meet your expectations from the tradition that has come to define a truly innovative company!

    "BEWARE, 1.x was DANGEROUS"

    June 19, 2003   |   By Durandal v1.1b

    Version: Mailsmith 1.5.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Dumped it after I lost 3 mailboxes (MONTHS OF MAILS!); any small corruption will break the entire database unrecoverably!! Went into their forums looking for help and only found LOTS of people with the same exact problem. Sent mail asking for any way of salvaging anything from the broken, nonstandard databases, and just got canned answers. TERRIBLE. Won't try again.
Horribly dissappointing from BareBones: this DOES suck badly, no matter their slogan.
