CNET Editors' review
This no-frills application is designed to protect your files and folders by masking them with new names, but occasional stability issues mar its effectiveness. Lock It Down's basic, tabbed interface includes a file tree for easily browsing and selecting folders and files. Select one of the large buttons (Lock Files or Lock Folders), and the files or folders will be visible but masked with a new name and extension and can't be opened. For even more security, you can include a password for each item before locking it. The process is easily reversed with the unlock buttons. Additional features include a Favorites manager that allows you to save links in an encrypted text file, and we like the extra security measures. You also can save your online account and login information with the Password Wallet, and securely remove files using the File Shredder. Though the program worked well with most files and folders, a file-sharing error occurred on some test machines and Lock It Down wasn't able to secure the items. This 15-day trial utility shows promise, but still needs work to effectively and securely hide your important files and folders.Publisher's Description
