LibreOffice for Mac installs easily and comes with a free license, making it a powerful substitute for Microsoft Office. It has all the essential features of the former and is accessible to both professionals and casual users, though it does experience some difficulties when handling macros.

Pros

Compatibility with MS Office: As an alternative to MS Office, LibreOffice for Mac supports all the major MS file formats, as well as some files, which MS Office does not, making it a versatile office suite. Small installation file: Weighing under 200MB, the installation file can be downloaded in just a few minutes. The application itself installs just as quickly.

Open Source: LibreOffice is an open-source program with a free license model, which means that home and small office users don't have to pay for it.

Cons

Macros don't always work: In our tests at least, complex Excel spreadsheet macros didn't run properly on LibreOffice.

Learning curve: While easy to learn and similar in design to MS Office, this office suite has its own set of tools, features, and customization options, many of them differently arranged. If you're switching from MS Office to it, you'll need at least a few hours to get used to its more advanced features.

Bottom Line

Thanks to its compatibility with MS Office files and a host of other file formats for word processors, LibreOffice for Mac can be a viable alternative to Microsoft Office, whether you need it at home or at work. However, keep in mind that MS Office macros don't always work on LibreOffice. Also, be ready to spend a few hours discovering its many features and options.

"Becoming the dependable alternative"

June 20, 2014  |  By mab52

 |  Version: LibreOffice 4.2.5

Pros

I had to switch to NeoOffice awhile back, but the last few releases of LibreOffice are just fine. I hope they continue to be stable and dependable.

Cons

Chunky file size. I mostly use this for WP. Would be nice if that were a stand alone.

Summary

Try it! It's good enough unless you absolutely need MS Office for something it won't do.

"4.2 is another great update"

January 30, 2014  |  By drumsandmusic

 |  Version: LibreOffice 4.2

Pros

* new startcenter looks so much better and adds efficientcy and functionality
* the Sifr icon set (activate it under LibreOffice > Preferences > LibreOffice > View > Iconstyle) makes for a much improved modern appearance and does away with the outdated old icons we're all so tired of seeing

Cons

* still a lot of improvements to be made

Summary

Great office suite, that just got a lot better!

"Painfully slow, but does a few things Paged does not."

November 10, 2013  |  By mdsmith

 |  Version: LibreOffice 4.1.3

Pros

Will paste web copy nearly like original, whereas Pages alters format requiring numerous changes to become intelligible.

Cons

ANY action taken (save, print edit, etc.) takes 30 t0 60 seconds to complete.

Summary

If you prefer what Libre Text can do, and don't mind the lag, I recommend it.

"Similar to Microsoft Office 2003"

May 24, 2013  |  By katnip3

 |  Version: LibreOffice 4.0.3

Pros

Above all, it's 100% free. It can save and open in Microsoft Office file formats. In many ways, I like it better than Microsoft Office. Some things, such as borders on tables, may take a little getting used to though. LibreOffice, not OpenOffice, often comes preinstalled on Linux systems such as Ubuntu.

Cons

The spreadsheet application crashes frequently, although that may have been resolved in the lastest update.

"4.0.3.3 keeps getting better"

May 09, 2013  |  By drumsandmusic

 |  Version: LibreOffice 4.0.3

Pros

This is great software, very usable and reliable. But cnet still has not fixed the missing LO icon for the LO mac software entry. Is it that hard? This was first reported on 11th feb 2013. 3 month later and nothing has happened. That is of course not LOs fault but CNETs.

Cons

nothing really. You are using a opensource office suite using a free file format.

"Great software"

February 11, 2013  |  By drumsandmusic

 |  Version: LibreOffice 4.0

Pros

works good, free, will be further improved in the future, great community

Cons

nothing from what I can tell.

Summary

I don't understand, why this listing does not have an icon. The windows version of LO does have an icon. The mac version does not. Why is that? Also where's the button to inform admins of this site about such minors?

I wrote them a message about this, but it never got answered nor was an icon added. Very bad. cnet on the decline?

"comparable to Microsoft Office 2003"

September 27, 2012  |  By katnip3

 |  Version: LibreOffice 3.6.1

Pros

It's a complete office suite for free. LibreOffice is especially popular with Linux users and comes preinstalled on Ubuntu.

Cons

Some programs, such as spreadsheets, crash frequently. This will probably be fixed in future updates.
