CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: Seth Rosenblatt on November 08, 2008

This image viewer and editor is a longtime favorite among our staff, and with good reason. IrfanView is simple, fast, and free for individual use. Upon installation, the app attempts to install two Google programs, but you can opt out.

The program lets you open and edit images, as well as multiple media formats. You can cut and crop images, apply batch conversions, add, sharpen, or blur effects, create panoramas, and change color modes easily. The program continues to add support for an array of file formats and has plug-in support for most image, video, and sound formats, including MP3, AVI, audio CD, and WMA. The interface is far from fancy but should be easy enough for most users to figure out. An IrfanView Thumbnails shortcut on the desktop offers an Explorer-like file tree that quickly displays all images in a particular folder. The latest version includes a basic drawing palette made accessible by hitting F12. It contains simple Erase, Draw, Fill, Rotate, Draw an Arrow, and Color Picker commands, perfect for grabbing screenshots and highlighting image specifics.

IrfanView does what it does well. It's not going to replace a major paint program, but why use a meat cleaver to cut a stick of butter?

    "My favorite tool for pictures"

    by mrobinson52 on May 19, 2010

Pros: A great tool for viewing and editing graphics. Easy to use for the basic tasks, and easy on the system resources.

Cons: I am graphically challenged, so there are lots of advanced features that are really beyond my skill, and some of the tools take more effort than I am willing to devote to them. Really more a fault in me than in the program.

Summary: I have been using Irfanview for almost a decade now, and I really love it, and it just keeps getting better and better. I encourage everyone to send Skiljan the $12 to register the program so he will keep it so great!

    "Essential imaging software. Highly recommended."

by BrerBunny on May 19, 2010

Pros: This product is excellent. It handles a large variety of image formats including the various RAW formats. It handles multi-page images, and with the ghost-script add in can also handle pdf documents. It even plays various video formats! Feature-rich.

Cons: The thumbnails side of the program is not as good, and the contact sheet tool is unpredictable, although it has improved immensely since earlier versions. CTRL+W shortcut to close windows has been reassigned to full-screen, which is a pain.

Summary: This product is feature rich, can be upgraded with many plug-ins, can perform a large variety of basic and advanced image manipulation and allows you to convert between a large number of the huge range of image formats available today. It even allows the creation of icons and animated gifs. Once you try this product, you will wonder how you ever lived without it. And it's free to home users!!

"A good software for non professionals"

by SKKakulapati on May 19, 2010

Pros: All normal necessities can be achieved by this Software. I have been using for quite some time.

Cons: Pictures or photos cannot be cut on the out line. So other unwanted items too come when you copy or cut your required photos or pictures. It would be desirable to enable cutting along the shape or outline of the picture to paste it any where else.

Summary: I liked it for its simplicity. Only other desirable facility I wanted is mentioned in the cons here.
