Product ranking:#12 in Icon Tools
A wonderful light-weight, but powerful, icon creator and editor that can do everything the ordinary user may need for producing custom icons.
Icon Sushi is an excellent alternative to expensive icon software that are bloated with advanced features that ordinary users wouldn't need.
This software works fine in Windows 7 (though I employ XP compatibility mode.)
The Cons are essentially that if you don't understand the software's characteristics and limitations, you may get frustrated.
1. Icon Sushi doesn't actually install on your PC. See summary for install instructions.
2. How the software works is not obvious. Its best features take a moment to discover and learn.
3. The software only accepts correctly sized images in a ratio aspect of 1:1 (but that is the necessary size for creating an icon). So, the software seems to reject images that are not correctly sized for icons (and I think this aspect has caused the negative ratings).
4. Icon Sushi can't resize or crop imported images. But there are plenty of free programs can resize or crop.
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: You download the ZIP file. Create a folder called ICON SUSHI. Place the ZIP into a folder and UnZip it. Put the folder into your 'My Documents' folder. Create a shortcut for the EXE file...and put the icon in your Start menu - Programs. The software will open perfectly fine. But, in Windows 7, if the software opens with a 'blurry' appearance, close it...and set it to XP Compatibility Mode (that's a native W7 utility....google it)...and it will open perfectly thereafter.
Program does not handle large image files.
(Smallest I tried was 500x500 px.)
Program does not handle PNG images.
(Despite the listing of a save to PNG option.)
I would not recommend this program as it appears to be very limited in its capabilities.
I don't see any
Neither as Pros
Don't deserve time nor effort trying it. Its worthless.
Powerful and Effective
Maybe a Little Complex for Novices
It is a great and advanced-seeming Icon Editor. I really like how it has a one-file Icon Library feature. That can be very convenient to select through in the Windows Icon browser. Also, I had compatibility problems with the Icon files it produced when I used Easy Picture2Icon (http://download.cnet.com/Easy-Picture2Icon/3000-2192_4-10407633.html?tag=mncol;6). These weren't present with Icon Sushi.

Updated on Dec 7, 2010After playing with it more, I can see it has a lot of useful features including the 256x256 windows 7 icons! And even the 256x256 icons work perfectly in other programs like Object Dock. My only real complaint is that it CANNOT resize pictures you import for you. You MUST use another image program to convert your image of choice into a 48x48 (XP / Normal Windows Large Icon) or 256x256 (Windows 7 Jumbo Icon) BMP or PNG file in order for Icon Sushi to work with it. You can even open up DLL files you find in windows (in XP try the classic Windows 3 moricons.dll under c:\Windows\system32) ;) and save them or your collection as a single Icon Library file (.ICL).
Once you get over the inconvenience of having to re-size and convert it to BMP or PNG in another program, this program can easily suit your Icon Creation needs! Don't let other people dictate what Windows will look like for you !!!!!!!
Updated on Dec 9, 2010I'm just noticing more great features of this product. It has an advanced transparency editor inside to make sure you can accomplish a transparent color in the icon. It also uses a nice spraypaint effect to accomplish this. Also, you can import PNG files that already have transparency and save them as .ico for windows --- so you can make them transparent in your favorite editing program and import them. Also, like any good icon editor, you can save "multi icons" --- a .ico file with multiple sizes embedded into it. I just saved one that looks perfect on XP (48x48) and has the full size in ObjectDock (256x256).
My only complaint with this software is a slight learning curve to understand all the features. It does it all. It's great!
Does everything you would need for icons.
I didn't find it sooner.
I couldn't believe it is SoooOOOooo easy and I am like really slow. Omg i bet a four year old could work this program. I am soOOOooo please with this and it's FREEEE ...omg thank you soooOOOOoo much peoples who made this program!!!!
I Love Everything about it because it works!!!!
It Works!!!! and you don't need to read any directions ...It just works!!!!
Step 1 Extract the aicon file
Step 2 Select the picture but make sure you have the scroll bar under all files so that it shows everything
Step 3 Choose picture
Step 4 Save icon and you can use it for ANYTHING INCLUDING DESK ICONS!!!!!
It´s free, easy to install and to use.
Having to save to bmp first.
My old Pic2Ico file vanished. This does the same job with no conflict with AVG or Spybot.
I have not located that yet.
It was simple & direct, produced the desired icons from the .bmps that I wanted to use as replacements for folder iicons. It is SO simple that I cannot explain what it does to do what it does.
Does what it says it does. Couldn't ask for anything more.
No cons that I can think of.
This is a useful converter to make .ico files. Enough said.
Free, simple, easy to use, handles most input formats
Doesn't handle ll desired formats, limited to resolution size it will handle
