Icon Restore gives you the ability to save the placement of your desktop icons and restore them to their saved placement any time they get moved. Simply place your icons wherever you want them on your desktop, right click My Computer (or any system icon) and left click on 'save icon layout' from the pop up menu. If your icons ever get moved because your computer entered safe mode or you changed the screen resolution, right click My Computer and left click on 'restore icon layout' from the pop up menu. It is the perfect solution for anyone that needs to change the screen resolution frequently.
Windows 7 keeps removing most of my shortcuts so I thought that this program would be perfect, but I was wrong. First time that Windows 7 removed my shortcuts I clicked on the icom and found that I could only restore two (out of about 20) shortcuts...unless I paid for the full program. No way - so it's been uninstalled and only now have I noticed that it's compatible Microsoft systems don't include anything currently in use. Don't bother installing it folks.
(And I still hate Windows 7's clean up activity.)
Used to be great, no more
Cait Dhubhgaill
Pros
It will save a desktop layout but is very limited and sometimes does not work
Cons
No support. The paid version is supposed to have more than 2 layouts you can save. It requires a donation and they will send you a password and user name. Mine came, but it would never work. Tried contacting them several times with no success...be forewarned their website pages have not been updated in 6 or more years depending on the page.
Summary
If you can get by with only 2 saved layouts, fine, but be sure not to tell the program to save layout on shutdown, or you may have big problems. My layout went blank this week, and the program DID NOT restore my icons at all. Be sure to take a snapshot of your layout and save it in a safe place. That is what saved me, not this program.
Didn't work on Windows 10
thisisweird!
Pros
None at all.
Cons
It didn't work. The option to save the setting never displayed, even after a refresh.
Summary
This program didn't work on Windows 10.
Works with Vista 32Bit. Great! Thanks

Pros
It doesn't work so, it doesn't have any.
Cons
This app worked fine for years. However, on Window 7 it does nott restore them to the supposed saved places. Too bad it used to to a terrific job.
Used this utility for a couple of years with no problems, fantastic when it did. Super easy to use.
Cons
Not working correctly lately, almost as though there's a limit to the number of icons it will handle. The last few I've added don't get saved when I Save and don't get restored to where they were when I Restore. Every once in awhile, the whole desktop gets whacked again and the tool can't restore any of it. Stuff is saved in the registry so one can only imagine what's happened. Tried deleting a few destktop icons to see if I could find the failure threshold, but no luck. Tried contacting the developer, but his website is gone.
Summary
Can't recommend this any longer. Doesn't work reliably and appears to be orphaned at this point.
love it ... it's fast, it's simple, it works, i love it

Valuable Windows Software!

Pros
* Adds another functionality that Windows forgot.
* Has never failed to work on my Vista 32 bit.
* It's Free!
Cons
??? - I've used this for 3 years, and it has yet to fail me.
Summary
I don't understand those reviewers who insist that somehow the author of this free software owes them something! They don't tell us why, but they do somehow feel that the software deserves only one star because it doesn't work on their 64 bit system! So? Using that logic, they should go through all the perfectly good Apple software and rate it one star because it too doesn't work on their Windows OS - Dumb shits.
Thank you, Mr. Taylor, for a useful tool that has done its job well for a long time.
It works very well for the OSes it is intended for.

Pros
There applets out there that have more features, but, if all you want is a basic "keep my icons where I put them" program, then none else will do.
