HyperCam captures the action and sound from any part of Windows desktop and saves it to standard AVI movie files. Captures cursor movements, menus selections, windows popping up, and everything else you see on the screen. Correctly handles color palette changes if recording in 256 color mode. Allow you to pan the recorded area around the screen. Optionally annotates recorded movies with text.

free easy to use easy to setup(may require you to look at video or two) easy on the CPU and RAM allows hd recording with 1920x1080 resolution easy hotkeys sound works fine. and video is done and rendered the second you stop recording
Cons
cannot record games that run in full screen mode only in windowed full screen. no face cam option either from what i know.
Summary
all in all one of the best free recording software's i have ever used i would recommend this first over all others.

Free, easy to set up.
Cons
records blank screen, had to add Miso so screen would stay active but everything crashed when hard drive filled up. It runs a lot smother on Win 8 then XP pro.
Summary
It could use a screen saver and monitor pkg from not shutting down. Should be able to have a timer to make sure that there is no crash

Installs junkware from SweetPacks w/o permission. Changes homepages w/o permission. Junkware can't be removed easily.
Summary
During installation, it offers to install a junkware applications. I pressed "do not accept" and it installed the junkware, changed my homepage to sweet packs on both Firefox and IE (Chrome was spared because I use a portable version). The uninstall process is semi-successful but I still wasted half an hour going into the various programs and resetting homepages, and fixing the registry. Note to C/Net: This is starting to happen a lot lately with Download.com programs. Quality Control has gone down the drain. Odd since this such an easy problem to fix.

Despite carefully clicking around the toobar "options," I still ended up with unwanted extensions added to every browser, and a malicious DLL file that thankfully my antivirus caught immediately. If you installed this version, please run antivirus and search your computer for "foodbuzz." PLEASE REMOVE!

Pros
Fairly easy to use. Captures just about everything & anything: youtube, webinars, streaming media, etc. Latest version 2.27 doesn't even have the watermark anymore. Great recorder for the price: free.
Cons
No complaints. Just make sure you untick requests to put toolbars & adware to avoid malware junk. Sometimes audio and video are out of sync, but that can be adjusted one way or the other.
Summary
I've used hypercam for years with no issues. However on this latest re-install ( PC reformatted to remove nasty viruses) I had no sound, just like the other comments. After searching the forums high & low, finally figured it out: my recorder level was set too low, and my speakers volume was too low. Dble click the speaker icon (by clock icon,righthand corner taskbar): Volume Control > Options > Properties. You should see radio buttons for 'Playback' and 'Recorder'. Click 'Recorder' and make sure volume bar is set adequately. If still no sound, lots of tips on the tech forums, espec. hyperionics ( hypercam) forum. The volume setting on your speakers affects how loud you can record. After upgrading to some good stereo speakers, I can fully control the quality and loudness of the recording via those stereo speakers. A graphic equalizer can also help fine-tune audio quality.
