Even if you run reliable antivirus software -- and you do, don't you? -- it's never a bad idea to have a supplemental program that can pick up malware that your regular antivirus application might miss. HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) is an easy-to-use program that can quickly scan for and remove a variety of nasty things that might be lurking on your computer.

HitmanPro 3 has an intuitive interface that makes it easy to get started. If you're ready to plow ahead with the default scan, just click Next. If you'd like to do some customizing, the Settings button will take you to a variety of menus that let you control how the program operates. Users can set HitmanPro 3 to run a scan at startup or on a particular day of the week, and there are also options for configuring a proxy. The Early Warning Scoring feature lets security professionals detect possible threats based on suspicious software behavior. We chose to run HitmanPro3 with the default settings and chose the default scan, as opposed to the quick scan option. The program took a little less than 3 minutes to scan our system, detecting 13 cookies and one piece of adware. We then had the option to delete each of these individually or get rid of all of them with the click of a button. The program keeps a log of potentially harmful items that it finds, making it easy to keep track of what you've been infected with. HitmanPro 3 has no Help file, and seems to assume that users will either take advantage of its basic features and leave it at that, or that they're experts who already know how to use the more-advanced features. Either way, we think that HitmanPro3 is a simple and powerful tool for keeping your system squeaky clean, and we recommend it.

HitmanPro 3 installs and uninstalls without issues.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) 3.6.1.164. The trial version is limited to 30 days.

"Uploads to cloud"

March 25, 2014

 |  Version: HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) 3.7.9.212

Pros

My computer is (was?) infected with the "You need to update your version of media player" virus. Using the recommendations from http://malwaretips.com/blogs/update-media-player-virus/ I downloaded this software (Clicked on See Full Specs, then the manufacturer link, to avoid the CNET installer).

It quickly found 165 tracking cookies, and my scan through them, didn't find anything that would dispute it's accuracy.

Then it found two threats, Quiknowledge Setup & mp3arc.exe (I had downloaded this years ago, without ever using it), and quarantined one and removed the other.

Cons

The default settings are to "Automatically upload unknown suspicious files to the Scan Cloud."

I suggest unchecking this option. I had to cancel my scan, when hundreds of files on my computer began uploading (faster than I could cancel each one) to this "scan cloud". Now, my programs are sitting in their Scan Cloud, and I have no option to see this cloud, or remove my files from it.

Many years ago, PcMagazine had programs called PCPOWERTOOLS. I still have them in an archive folder. HitmanPro attempted to upload every tool in that archive, including many that I can created myself that changed the text and background colour on the computer, via ANSI.

Other programs I wrote, including a text file editor, back when EDLIN was the only file editor commonly available, is now sitting in their cloud.

Yes, I left the box checked to automatically upload.

Yes, I "agreed" to them uploading programs they could not recognize to their cloud.

No, I didn't authorize theft.

Summary

A good programs, but beware of the default settings.

There is no way to pause the scan, only cancel. The first 600,000 or so files it scanned, it did with just a blank scanning page. Only after it found the tracking cookies, did it update to tell me where it was scanning and what it found. For those few minutes, I was left to wonder what it was doing.

The 30-day free activation seems to work - at the screen to remove items found, it asks for an activation code. Immediately under that, it has the option to activate the 30-day code. I'm on day 1, it worked for me.

Sensitive data on your computer should be removed prior to running this, especially if your data is in the form of an executable program.

Updated on Mar 25, 2014

I didn't find a setting for skipping known file types from being scanned. I have a few MP3 files on my computer, there is no need for these to ever be scanned. There was no option to include / excluded them.

After unchecking Upload to Cloud, I ran it for the second time, I got the same "Scanning your computer ..." screen, and just an increasing number next to "Files: ". Perhaps it was just counting my files, before actually scanning it. Maybe it was scanning without finding anything. In any case, just a blank page. This time it found 3 tracking cookies, and then the green scroll bar began to progress across the screen, as it was now "Classifying (__%)..."

Files not recognized are listed in the suspect file section, with the default option to Upload, "In Queue for Scan Cloud". Each file it finds, a pull-down must be clicked to not upload the file. The "Apply to All" feature is not available.

This tedious task of unselecting, makes this program, Not Recommended.

"GARBAGE or not???"

March 01, 2014  |  By Dude37

 |  Version: HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) 3.7.9.212

Pros

None None None

Cons

Downloaded Hitman because it was a "good idea" according to this site... It installed along with DL Cleaner, a backup program of some sort, Jotsey, and another program I forgot... Massive amounts of popups ensued, removing all from add / remove took time, and system restore was not possible...

Summary

IF Hitman isn't Garbage, and those mentioned programs hijacked on the back of Hitman, why weren't they caught???

Malware Bytes Pro caught all of the programs, by the way... The only way that I was able to remove Jotsey was by a MB flash scan...

Trust level is zero for Hitman... If anything, it proved that buying MB Pro was a great idea

 |  Version: HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) 3.7.9.212

Pros

none..Not as advertized.

Cons

Massive fail could even detect a low grade hijack browser by Conduit or spigot Inc. Don't even consider this product if you can call it that.

Summary

One star is way too high. More like star dust.

"NOT MUCH HELP WITH SCORPION POP-UP BANNER ADS"

December 09, 2013  |  By gofjohn

 |  Version: HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) 3.7.7.205

Pros

Easy installation.

Cons

I was primarily interested in stopping the many pop up ads that appeared to come from Scorpion. I uninstalled the Scorpion program I found in my program files, but the ads continued. Hitman found one other objectionable file and other stuff, but was no help with the intruding ads. I used my Windows file search for my C Disk, and it found 6 other Scorpion files/folders in other places which I manually deleted. That seems to have solved my problem.

"Terrible Cusotmer Service"

November 30, 2013  |  By Shar_EM

 |  Version: HitmanPro 3 (32-bit) 3.7.7.205

Pros

No complaint with the program. It works great.

Cons

Twice now I've had problems with the program not working after it does a program update. Customer service after repeated attempts to contact them finally helped get it going. Now, not 2 months later, same thing. But this time after an initial reply am getting nowhere. Email requests for support to support@hitmanpro.com 'bounce back' and facebook messages (where they initially responded) now go unanswered and ignored.

Summary

What is the point in having a great product but terrible customer service... especially for a paid product?
