Editors' Review

HandBrake is a video converter program intended to both rip and convert video files to work on a number of supported devices.

The features of this converter are easy enough to understand. An advanced computer user will most likely be able to use HandBrake for its full purpose, but a user who knows the basics should be able to figure out how to work through the main steps. You simply have to have a file or DVD to work with, and HandBrake will help with some of the less obvious steps by indicating the missing information that needs to be inserted. It took a couple tries to correctly convert a 15-minute video file the first time. It seemed to shut down without finishing, but eventually it worked. That took about 40 minutes to finish converting and encoding. Time results will obviously vary depending on the file size. DVD ripping seems to work fine and the time varies here as well, depending on the DVD length. The Help button will take you to the publisher's Web site, where some of the information is easy to understand but the more-detailed parts are intended for a more advanced user. It is certainly not the easiest, most efficient converter program we have seen out there.

It didn't take long to download, and the installation process was very simple. There weren't any extra downloads or offers hidden within the installation process, and you'll find that setting this is easy.

"v. .0.10.0 doesn't work"

December 11, 2014  |  By billyhoes

 |  Version: HandBrake 0.10.0

Pros

Previous version give 5/5 star on

Cons

This version doesn't work to rip DVDs

Summary

Using .0.9.9 I was able to rip DVDs no problem (I have a large collection I'm slowly converting o digital). Upgraded to .0.10.0 and it doesn't work - won't find the Titles. It goes through the motions but ends with nothing to select. Stick with .0.9.9 (you can still find it via google).

"Slow and unreliable"

October 31, 2014  |  By Algernon

 |  Version: HandBrake 0.9.9.1

Pros

It's not ISIS.

Cons

You could take a trip to Mars and back and this program will still be "working" -- except you are just as likely to discovery after all that time that it didn't work at all.

"Gets the job done."

June 01, 2014  |  By gami1996

 |  Version: HandBrake 0.9.9

Pros

It just works.

Cons

Requires a separate program to rip the DVD. However, Handbrake manages the conversion to mobile formats better (solves audio sync problems on the iPad for example).

"It fit the bill for me"

March 29, 2014  |  By geeman1082

 |  Version: HandBrake 0.9.9

Pros

Great price.
Worked well.

Cons

Despite the inclusion of "presets", the operation is not intuitive for the occasional user. This is due to the myriad algorithms in use on DVDs, no doubt, but still makes it tough for those of us not schooled in the art.

Summary

I needed something to rip the video off of a DVD (which contained video of my quartet) that someone had given me. This did the trick nicely, as long as I didn't touch any of the settings ... yes, I know, but I couldn't help poking around a bit to see what options are available, and ended up having to restart the program from scratch to get it to work ;-)

"Excellent. No need to try out alternatives"

March 26, 2014  |  By software_simba

 |  Version: HandBrake 0.9.9

Pros

Its powerful, easy to use, reliable, is kind on system resources, has no malware and no nag-ware. Best part - its 100% free, no strings no emails no newsletters, nothing.

Cons

No cons, really.

Summary

If like me you usually try out 3 or 4 alternatives before picking one then let me save you the hassle. Handbrake has everything you need. You won't find a better alternative.

"Not as good as mentioned."

February 17, 2014  |  By linzgang

 |  Version: HandBrake 0.9.9

Pros

The speed is two slow. BTW, it also make big noise during the transfer.

Cons

I would like to choose other products than this one. I think next time I would choose xilisoft.com and wei-soft.com 's product.

What's new in version 0.10.0

Encoders
We are introducing several new encoders with this release and replacing others.

  • Intel QuickSync Video: is a hardware based H.264 encoder that is available on Intel CPUs. Currently, QSV is only supported on Windows but we hope to bring this to Linux users in the future. Thanks to the good people at Intel for making this possible!
  • H.265: is now available through x265 1.4. While this encoder is still fairly new, we have seen some promising results come out of it. It's still under heavy active development and is only going to improve over time!
  • VP8: using the libvpx encoder. We have now deprecated Theora (VP3) in favour of VP8 which is a more modern encoder offering better quality encodes at lower file sizes.
  • LibFaac: Has now officially been removed due to GPL compatibility issues, and replaced with the libav AAC encoder as the new default for Windows and Linux. In addition, we have added the FDK AAC encoder for Windows and Linux as a optional compile-time option. The Mac release will continue to use CoreAudio as the default.
  • As usual, we've updated a number of the core libraries including x264 and libav
