Gramps is a genealogy program for Linux, Windows, Mac, and FreeBSD that allows you to easily build and keep track of your family tree. It supports the GEDCOM standard, allows fine grained privacy controls and can generate many different types of reports. Features include a dashboard to help you monitor the progress of your research, list of every individual in your records featuring birth or death dates, list of all sources referenced in your records featuring authors and publication details, citations referenced in your records featuring quality, date, volume, and page, source repositories referenced in you records featuring web addresses, physical addresses, and email contact information, every event in your records featuring descriptions, event types, dates, and places, text notes included in your records featuring note type and preview, and graphic representation of the active person's ancestry featuring photos and birth or death dates.
What's new in this version: Version 3.4.4 includes disable or enable indent spouse on descendants tree option, fixes regular expressions on place filter rule, and avoids errors when setting wrong value as markup for invalid dates.

"Doesn't work in Windows"

None - since it wouldn't in Windows XP, unable to evaluate Pros.

Summary
I tried running both the portable version and desktop version. In both cases, a small start-up screen loaded and then vanished. I was disappointed since the features seemed promising. I ended up purchasing RootsMagic but if the bugs in the Windows version of GRAMPS can be worked out, I'd be willing to re-visit the program.

The MOST powerful genealogy program ANYWHERE free OR expensive.It is pretty simple to go to the GRAMPS website and figure it out.
It is written in python so it is EXTREMELY fast compared to anything written in Java. I love Java, but it is so D*** slow and uses tons of PC resources.Cons
Not very user friendly, If you don't have the IQ to figure stuff out, don't bother rating the program.
AGAIN THE ONLY NEGATIVE ... is it requires at least an AVERAGE IQ. Once you figure it out, it is well worth the effort learning.Summary
I feel that some of the software developers may be threatened by the power of this program and may give it a bad rap.
This and Family Tree Legions is the only free-ware I use. FTL is simple to use even for a beginner and I recommend it for less technical family members. There is very little that GRAMPS wont do. FIGURE IT OUT DUMBAS*! Powerful features are available as plug-ins (similar to GIMP and Photo-shop). If you can write your own plug-ins, you can expand well beyond ALL of its current abilities. So the ONLY limitations of GRAMPS is your OWN IQ.
... and NO I do not work for them, program for them, or any way connected to them. Just looking at it from a degreed programmer's view ... I admire genius when I see it. -

Downloaded program. Took a good five minutes for all the files to download but, even so, received a message that it was missing several files and would not run.

With all the good programs on the market, don't waste your time on this garbage.
