    "Too complicated."

    February 27, 2011  |   By WoodyO1

    Version: Garmin MapInstall 2.1.6

    Pros

I ultimately did what it was supposed to do.

    Cons

Downloaded file was not saved where one would expect it be.

    Summary

This was the most convoluted download I have ever seen. Took me five attempts before I got it right (I think).

"Only good for people with Lifetime upgrades."

    May 15, 2010  |   By TonioLarabi

    Version: Garmin MapInstall 2.1.5

    Pros

    Really, none.

    Cons

I would rather spend another 50 dollars and buy a new Garmin, rather than pay the fee for a one-time upload. Garmins are getting less expensive, so why aren't the maps?

    Summary

This is an application for those of you that have a lifetime free map updates, otherwise, just buy a new Garmin and sell your old one!

    "Terrible software for good hardware"

    October 7, 2009  |   By jasonwoolfe_dotmac

Oh dear, it's Garmin. I've got an Edge 705 - fantastic hardware, ABYSMAL software. This is just one example of how Garmin makes everything as difficult as possible for the user. When you buy the unit, it says 'Mac compatible' on the box - but what they don't tell you is that you need a PC as well as your Mac to get the maps onto your GPS.
The best solution I've found so far (after 4 months using the unit and loving it) is never to touch any of their software and use a third party app (I like Ascent) as much as possible.

This is typical Garmin. Its incomplete software from a company specializing in lousy interfaces, lousy customer service and proprietary products.

MacGPS, plus MapTech charts plus just about any receiver you want to use. A lot less money and a more pleasant experience.

I use a Garmin (marine) but would certainly have looked at other receivers had I known the above when I bought it.

    "Waste of Time"

    Version: Garmin MapInstall 2.0.0.1 beta

    Summary

This software is a joke. All this software does is load a map on to a Garmin GPS that has already been extracted on a PC. You can't edit a map, you need a PC for that. You can't buy a new map and load it with your app, no.. you need to extract it on the PC, copy the data to the mac and then upload it to the GPS. If I was gong to go through all that trouble, why wouldn't I just use the PC, I would need to have one anyways?

Most mac users don't have a PC or don't want to touch one. How does this software do anything for them? The only reason this software exists is Garmin made a promise to bring software support to the Mac in 2006.

    "January 10, 2006
Garmin Announces GPS Product Support for Mac OS X"

It's close to the end of 2007 and this is what support means to Garmin.

    "Worked great"

    August 17, 2007  |   By Walterr

This is a dream come true for me. I have a Garmin iQue with a 1 Gig SD card. Every time I need to travel I need to add maps and remove the maps from the last trip. I have a PC, but it is so old that I usually borrow a PC at work to change my maps. I'd really prefer to load maps from my Mac. Mapinstall allows me to do this. I borrowed a work pc one more time and converted all my maps, sent them to my Mac, and can now change the maps on my GPS all I want.

    For me, this works perfectly.

    "Why use this?"

    Version: Garmin MapInstall 2.0 beta

    Summary

I do not understand what Garmin is trying to accomplish here. If you have a PC and you have the map data loaded on your PC, you simply have to use their Webupdater or their MapSource programs to update your system or Map data directly from the PC. What do you have to gain by going through all of this hassle to update your map data?? What is Garmin trying to prove? Now if you could manipulate the data for routs, etc. like you can on MapSource for the PC, then you have something. But with this, you have nothing and nothing to gain? Simply an annoying program so that you can hook up your Mac to download a Map upgrade that you already had on the PC??? What the??

Garmin, come on now. Get the MapSource progam ported to the Mac and get the new Map data format set up for the Mac.
