Editors' review

Freemake Video Converter combines video editing and conversion into one well-built application. It features an attractive design, a large amount of supported file types, and a modest video editing tool that is engaging and enjoyable. You will not find many faults with this application.

Pros

Friendly, appealing interface: Nothing about this program is complicated or unattractive. Large banner buttons and step-by-step guidance make using Freemake Video Converter a breeze. We found that the contrasting color scheme was beneficial for locating key objects.

Excellent conversion: We converted a wide selection of files and observed that the average video conversion only took approximately 40 seconds to one minute. Freemake Video Converter supports almost every media file type imaginable and features conversion settings designed for specific devices.

Great tools: The built-in video editor is comparable to many other applications, and the slideshow feature is one of the best we've ever used. The ability to merge files before conversion is great and works wonderfully.

Cons

Slow ripping: We used the DVD ripping tool on Freemake and were a tad unsatisfied that it took over 30 minutes to rip an hour-long segment. This was a standard definition file, so ripping a larger, more defined DVD will likely take a considerable amount of time.

Bottom Line

Freemake Video Converter is one of the best applications we have encountered. It will suit nearly all of your needs, but we think adding a few more options would make it perfect. Ideally, we would like to see it include a free subtitle editor similar to that of Subtitle Edit. Nevertheless, this application is fully loaded, and we suggest you download Freemake Video Converter because it is the best on the market.

"Used to be great - but DO NOT install this."

    August 23, 2014   |   By stuyd11

    Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

    Pros

Great functionality - but now nullified by malware.

    Cons

As many others have pointed out, this has now become a malware-fest. Unfortunately I did not know this when I upgraded it. Even if you uncheck all the options to install crapware, it silently installs software that hijacks all your browsers and adds various services. It even managed to unpin Chrome from my taskbar. Fortunately I run Scotty WinPatrol but even this did not manage to stop everything. I've never seen it so busy.

    Summary

After having been happy with this for a number of years, its now time to avoid!

    "Great Program - Love it"

    August 02, 2014   |   By myjoe22

    Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.1.4.1

    Pros

Great tool for converting video to other formats. And you could also trim videos to. Much better the Machette Video Trimmer. You don't have to worry about finding key frames, which is a pain. And you don't loose any quality in the conversion or when trimming videos. I recommended highly

    Cons

Watch for the junk-ware that it tries to install. Use the custom install instead of the express to avoid adding unneeded extra free-ware to your computer

    Summary

Love it. I recommend it to all

    "Concerns about Linkey?"

    July 25, 2014   |   By michelle.wallace.965928

    Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.1.4.1

    Pros

As for Freemake Video Converter, I have found it to be a great and easy tool. You have several conversion options, and can cue videos to be converted. I am currently using it to convert MP4 files into AVI, and haven't noticed any quality change. It's one of the better conversion tools out there. Unfortunately, it does come bundled with unwanted programs, so be smart when installing it.

    Cons

    About Linkey...

Linkey is not a virus - but it does have the traits of one. It hijacks all of your browsers' settings, and is just generally invasive. If you have it, a quick google search can inform you how to remove it. I recommend using AdwCleaner.

Linkey, and other programs like itself, are often bundled with free software. An easy way to avoid such installations is to check the "custom install" option when downloading freeware, and uncheck any optional features.

(It is a good idea to run a virus protection software and AdwCleaner after installation regardless, as some unwanted programs/potential threats can pop up anyways.)

    Summary

Freemake Video Converter is a quick and easy tool, but be sure to select "custom install" when downloading to avoid any optional software. Linkey and it's assets can be removed if currently installed with AdwCleaner.

"Watch Out - Linkey Is Coming."

    June 29, 2014   |   By Basuto9

    Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.1.4.1

    Pros

None right now - it WAS my favorite video converter.

    Cons

It doesn't seem to give you any way NOT to install something called "Linkey", regardless of what you click/unclick. I looked up Linkey and this pretty much sums it up:
"Linkey is a browser plugin, which can be downloaded from the Internet. However, in most of the cases it sneaks inside computers in a bundle with freeware and shareware as a 'free addition' or 'additional download'. In order to avoid this, so you have to pay more attention to the installation process of such programs and find this check mark that says that you agree to install Linkey on your computer. When this program enters the system, it shows up on all web browsers that are installed on it. That's because it's compatible with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox browsers. Technically, Linkey is not a virus. However, it may start acting up by displaying continuous pop-up advertisements, initiating browser's redirections and causing similar things. In order to avoid that, you should remove Linkey."

    Summary

A shame that something great like Freemake is now attempting to force the consumer to add unwanted software. If I missed anything and Freemake can now be downloaded WITHOUT Linkey, please let us know.

"Freemake Video Converter - Great Program & Support"

    June 18, 2014   |   By gymnastix

    Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.1.4

    Pros

Freemake Video Converter is a great program that easily lets the user copy the URL from You Tube and other supported video websites, or even place an automatic downland button in one's browser (Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer), then convert to most of the common video formats (.avi, .mp4, .mpeg., .wmv, etc.) and with different download rates and video sizes.

Up until fairly recently, the program supported downloading of the free level of Hulu videos, which they hope to restore. This makes sense, as it is only the free Hulu videos that were supported, never Hulu Plus, a premium program. So it's not as if Freemake was providing a means by which to obtain video that is not free to all anyway. But sometimes is nice to have the option of storing a video file on one's hard drive to watch later.

The YouTube MP3 Converter is also a nifty little device, allows one to make .mp3 files from You Tube videos, which are often just uploaded CD and vinyl audio files anyway. Napster lives!

    Cons

As mentioned in the general review here, the Freemake programs are a bit slow (although that may also depend on one's browser and other programs running). But I am willing to wait for perfect audio and video files with non-intrusive watermarks that come after the files have played. And the interface is very user-friendly too.

    Summary

Besides all the great features of their varied programs, Freemake also has a very courteous support staff that e-mailed me back promptly, was friendly and answered exactly what I asked of them. How often does that happen with a support staff, if one is fortunate enough to even receive a reply at all?

What's more, unlike so many websites that leave outdated information and messages on their homepages, Freemake posts its most currently-available information when problems arise (as with the Hulu situation) so that users are not left with the feeling someone is "asleep at the wheel," or, worse yet, that the website has been all-but-abandoned. This is a great comfort when one wonders exactly why something has gone wrong, or if one thinks the problem may be with one's browser or operating system, then finds out it is not a problem with one's computer but on Freemake's end and they "are working on it."

These folks take an active interest in their users and are constantly trying to update their very useful programs. If only they could guarantee me absolute Hulu downloading capability (and possibly from some other video sites as well), I might even consider a nominal annual fee for the Video Converter program. But, at least for now, Freemake's programs are all free! This is the best video conversion and downloading program I have ever used (and I had used several before finding Freemake).

    "Best I've tried."

    May 12, 2014   |   By MacCool

    Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.1.3

    Pros

Simple interface is easy and intuitive.
    Converts between many formats.
Easily cut out portions of the video you don't want converted.

    Cons

Toolbars and junk during install if you don't choose custom.

    Summary

I don't know how many converters I've tried, many look promising but have too many negatives. Been using Freemake for around 8 months and it works better than anything else I've tried. No crashes, no settings to configure unless you want them, just drag and drop and convert.
