This tactical third-person shooter based on the graphics and engine of the Hitman series places you in an alternate history wherein the Soviet Union has won the Cold War and begun occupying the United States. Amid this turmoil, you must recruit a squad of resistance fighters who will battle the Red Army for control of New York City. Freedom Fighters looks to be an excellent small-squad action game, judging by the single-mission, single-player demo.

In the demo, you immediately find three willing recruits and start fighting the Soviets. Pressing the 1 key makes them follow or regroup, pressing 2 makes them scout an area or attack enemy troops, and pressing 3 places them in a defensive position. The first part of the demo involves a quick skirmish outside a gas station, which you should then detonate to fulfill your secondary mission. In the next part, you wage a full-fledged firefight for control of a Brooklyn post office. You cannot defeat the enemy single-handedly, so proper command of your team is a must. The lack of controller support is lamentable, and the interface is a bit simplified, but it's fairly easy to tweak the settings for maximum performance.

Publisher's description

From Electronic Arts :

Freedom Fighters is based on an alternate history in which the Soviet Union has won the Cold War and invaded America. You will take on the role of an average New Yorker named Christopher Stone and evolve into a fearless patriot who recruits and leads an army. Players will fight through the streets of New York City with seamless urban battles that take place outside as well as indoors. Because wars are not won alone, a key component of the game is the player's ability to recruit and lead fellow New Yorkers in the battle against the Red Menace. An intuitive recruiting command system allows him to give orders to his fellow soldiers and execute critical missions at the touch of a single button. The Freedom Fighters demo features one mission in which players must capture a post office that has been overrun by Soviets and is now being used as an operations base.

"CAN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!!"

    by sparks0213 on May 27, 2006

Pros: I picked this game up at a flea market

because it was cheap, ($2) and not knowing anything about the game, it wasn't going to break the bank. After installing the game, I found it near impossible to shut it down for the night. It has a believable story line, so it wasn't hard to find myself so immersed in the game. It has about a 1/2 dozen levels, and they get very challenging as you go along. I could never get any further than half way through, so there is a cheat for the game that gives you unlimited ammo, and a god mode. I wanted to see how the game ends,

so I played it on god mode. When you get to the end of the highest level, you'll be surprised on what happens when you finish all the levels. Have fun!!

Cons: There should be some patches or add-ons to make this great game even better.

"If you like Red Dawn, Red Alert to Red Alert 2, You will LOVE this."

by nmmgb on July 10, 2006

Pros: If you are like me, you have played the games of Command & Conquer, Red Alert to Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. Seen the movie Red Dawn and loved the detail on the Soviet tanks. Watched The Day After just because the Soviets are the ones we are fighting (Okay, and because of the Nukes). AND looked up the words Soviet, USSR, Nuclear War. I have. And I found another USSR game. Freedom Fighters. I played it once, ah... one more level surely cant hurt, until that "one" more begins to pop up over and over. After a while my mother came in (I'm not yet 18) and plyed me from my mouse and key board. I jump to the computer the next day and play and play. I eliminate whole divisions of those Communist sons o...[inappropriate comment] mother... [inappropriate comment] bitc...[inappropriate comment][inappropriate comment]. And now I just pray for a expansion pack or a Mexican campaign or some thing to quench my thirst for more of this game. AKA its a good game.

Cons: Unless you use cheats, You can die.

"Best PC game demo I've played."

by Vladdo on March 12, 2006

Pros: I've never downloaded a free PC game demo that was this in-depth, detailed and all-around fun. This is the post office level from Freedom Fighters, plus many more soldiers, a sniper rifle, and a rocket launcher.

I'd like to mention here that it is possible to change this demo's difficulty, and to adjust the sound levels of the music, voices and sound effects. After downloading the demo, go into the Freedom Fighters folder (default "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Freedom Fighters Demo\") and find the file named "Freedom.ini". It should open as a text file. You should be able to figure it out; to change difficulty, type "Easy", "Medium" or "Hard" next to "DifficultyLevel", and to change the volumes, simply enter in different numbers next to music, sound effects, speech, or intro music.

I have beaten this demo several times on these three difficulties and I just can't get enough of it.

"The Only Game I've Ever Purchased Immediately..."

    by DuneRoad1 on December 19, 2005

Pros: Unreal attention to detail. Can shoot out windows, lights, walls, cars. Amazing, realistic detailed cityscape. Very good music, great 'playablity'. Easy-to-master controls. Excellent balance of strategy and action. Actions affect later outcome. Seasons change. Like 'Escape from New York' wih Russians. A movie you can play. This is the best game I've ever played. Bought it new for $9.99 on Amazon. Playing it for over two months now.

Cons: It ends. No sequel. I want a follow up!
