"Great, but takes some learning."

June 12, 2011  |  By TysonKan

 |  Version: FlightGear 1.0

Pros

Pretty good graphics, hard to freeze a bogged down computer (THANK GOODNESS!!!), free, downloadable aircraft, you can be doing something else at the same time (it wont crash, etc.), realistic sounds & handling of aircraft.

Cons

Starting planes can be tricky / unrealistic (if only throttling up could start an aircraft), adding planes/locations is lacking much explanation, fighters are a bit laggy (if firing machine guns), multiplayer crashes on startup.

Summary

If you want realistic views and flight, but you don't mind doing some reading on http://www.flightgear.org/ (the project's website) about how to do many things, this is for you. If you want intense combat (or just something that shoots ^-^), pick-up-check-controls-and-go usage, or faster graphics try YS FLIGHT (you can get it at cnet for free) because this is really NOT for you.

Absolute bottom line summary:

There are a lot better flight simulators, but this one is pretty good.

"Good, 100% free, with great possibilities"

October 30, 2009  |  By claudg1950

 |  Version: FlightGear 1.0

Pros

Many interesting lightweight homebuilt airplanes (Long-EZ, Quickie, Cri-Cri), ultralights and early planes. They all behave differently, as they should.

Cons

You cannot use it on a laptop; you need a standard keyboard or a flying stick. I don't know why engines don't start when plane is on the ground. Graphics are minimal, though adequate.

Summary

As someone formerly involved with the homebuilt movement I love flying all those UL and experimentals.
Instructions are a little lacking: I haven't figured out yet how to start the engine (I have to set the plane "in the air" even though it is on the runway to get the engine running).
Beyond the runway, graphics are merely a blurry representation.
It took me some trying to get the extra planes installed.
There are several intermediate screens that I still don't know what they are for. I just go trough them.

"Poor graphics, ultra basic."

September 02, 2009  |  By benben101

 |  Version: FlightGear 1.0

Pros

It is small and very easy on the system resources.

Cons

It reminds me of the stuff you saw 20 years ago, too minimalist.
Didn't find any manuals or explanations.

Summary

Maybe experienced pilots could use this, I can't tell, but it is useless for learing or entertainment.

"Can't get to run on XP"

June 20, 2009  |  By aastrotech

 |  Version: FlightGear 1.0

Pros

Looks like it could be good if it worked for me.

Cons

Earned the money to pay for flight lessons, took the flight lessons and got a private pilot's license in less time than I spent trying to get this to work on XP. Still won't work.

Summary

Can't get it to run on XP, 2.7 Ghz Intel proccessor, latest Open GL , 64 Mb graphics memory, latest fgrun. Many hours study of available manuals and online resources. Still trying.
