CNET Editors' review
FinderPop is a free preference pane that extends the functionality of OS X's contextual menus, helping you more quickly browse, open, move, preview, and get info on folders, files, volumes, and apps using your mouse, in much the same way that other "launcher" apps increase efficiency with keyboard commands. This popular, venerable application has been around since Mac OS 9, and one of its main purposes is to emulate the old Apple Menu Items folder.
At its most basic, FinderPop lets you browse the contents of a folder or volume just by control-clicking on it, while also giving you quick access to your desktop items, any running processes, and recent apps, files, and folders, all within the standard OS X contextual menu. You can also click on any blank spot in the menu bar to get a one-click contextual menu without having to hold down the control key (useful if you have a one-button mouse), and you can add any favorite items to a "FinderPop Items" folder to have them instantly accessible through any contextual menu. As with many similar interface-enhancing apps, FinderPop has more features than you may ever need, use, or even discover, and it provides extensive options for customization. Thankfully, the app comes with a helpful online manual.
Publisher's Description
From Turlough O'Connor:
FinderPop is a Preference pane that extends OS X's contextual menus using a FinderPop Items folder much as the Apple Menu Items folder used to do for the Apple menu. It has other features too:
- Control-free popup in the Finder - handy for those with one-button mice.
- a launcher that takes up zero screen real estate, merely a click on any blank area of menubar away,
- a handy filesystem browser, allowing quick and easy access to files and disks in the Finder,
- a Processes menu (Command-click a blank menubar area.) fast access to 'Where's that dratted file I had on the Desktop?' (Shift-Click a blank menubar area.)
- a comprehensive collection of vaguely beer-related aphorisms in the Aboutbox.
What's new in this version: Works on PPC 10.4/10.5, and Intel 10.4/10.5, almost everything works on Intel 10.6/10.7. 2.4.1 fixes a bug with FP menu creation when an unresolvable alias is encountered, and now also passes the Finder selection to AppleScript .scpt files.

"Keeps Everything handy-only 1 mouse-click away!!!"
Version: FinderPop 2.4.1
Pros
Very easy to use and config. Keeps everything you need handy; folders, applications, files, running processes, etc.
Can pass files to active process, aliased apps, or drill down to any app.
Can move things with drill down through menus
Very actively maintained (now that author is using OS X) for "beta" & "between" official release versions, which are still quite stable...but in the forums only.
Great for those who miss the Apple Menu functionality of Mac OS 9.
ALL THIS FOR FREE!!! WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE??!!!!!
Kudos to this developer for keeping this tool alive!!!Cons
Small cosmetic quirks...Italics of alias, colour of aliases, some spacing of named entries.
Some dead spots when trying to click on empty menu bar.Summary
I've been a long time user from the days of Mac OS 9 . Missed it for a long time when it was absent from OS X. SSSOOOO Glad it is back!
Would be nice if it also included some Expose features, starting with just listing the open windows for a running process and showing active windows. Then would not need the Dock for much. -
