From Tom Ehlers :Finder's Friend is a script that allows users to quit and/or restart the Finder, which might improve a Mac's speed and/or fix minor temporary memory problems. Quitting all open applications automatically brings back the Finder. This shareware is fully functional, and this version adds better support for Mac OS 9 and fixes bugs.

Summary: I like to use this when I am surfing the web and have many windows open or I am downloading. It is easy and fast.
I don't have any hard data on how effective it is but it seems to make things go a bit smoother. -
