Editors' review

A good file renamer can make your life easier, especially if you take a lot of snapshots or have a large and ever-changing music collection. File Renamer Basic from Sherrod Computers is a free tool that can rename, copy, and move your files and folders based on a wide range of properties and options. It can scan thumbnails, filter files by extension, and add prefixes, suffixes, and other elements, including unique parameters. You can preview changes before File Renamer makes them, and Undo them after, if you like.

File Renamer Basic opens with an optional Tool Tip. The user interface is a bit crowded, with lots of functions tucked here and there, but the Office-style Ribbon toolbar helps keep tidy. All the tools and settings you need are grouped together in the main window; for example, the settings for renaming files or folders are grouped with the Copy/Move options at the end of the file entry field (including a Copy To directory that is inactive until needed). File Renamer Basic has an Explorer-style tree view for browsing to and adding files, including subfolders. The bottom half of the interface is where you configure the program's actions. Under File Name Properties, we could edit or exclude Prefix, Filename, Separator, Unique Parameter, Suffix, and Extension. A nice touch: File Renamer Basic displays a sample file name using your selections in a large font in the bottom panel. The Delete/Insert/Remove tab includes settings for both Starting Position and Number of Characters, while the Find/Replace tab offered useful options such as case and extension settings. The Advanced tab lets users create specific file names; it includes a useful tool to search for and insert EXIF keywords. File Renamer Basic also edits ID3 tags and renames lists.

Large buttons labeled Apply, Undo, and Preview make File Renamer Basic very easy to figure out and use, though an extensive Help menu offers plenty of resources, including a full manual and a forum. File Renamer Basic worked fast and well for single files and batches. We liked being able to create and save profiles for regular jobs, too.

"Works in XP Compatibility mode (mostly); Great UI"

    August 02, 2014   |   By vex1

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

    1. Ease of changing filename on the fly when selecting several groups of pics. I export my camera pics every 2 months so there are multiple events.
    2. Programmer considered Control- and Shift-Click for selecting files and then right click to check the files. Nice feature.

    Cons

    1. Buggy with selecting files to rename on Win7. Control- and Shift-click functionality also selects other files farther down the list but is obviously visible on the screen.
    2. It would be nice if it had the ability to preview multiple .jpg on screen rather than 'Open'.

    Summary

I'll use this product since the UI is excellent. I can overcome the quirky functionality.

    "New version keeps crashing"

    June 15, 2014   |   By Holtenwood

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

    Used to work great

    Cons

    New version crashes

    Summary

New version crashes on Windows Vista even after complete uninstall / re-install. Appears the uninstall of the previous version screwed up and deleted registry entries for Roxio Creator Basic. I have totally deleted the software so I could re-install Roxio and have Roxio work.

    "Does the Job"

    June 06, 2014   |   By John_Thyme

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

Has a good set of features.

    Cons

Interface is a bit daunting to look at.
Rename speed is slower then other programs.

    Summary

I downloaded File Rename Basic in conjunction with Batch Rename .EXE (two of the top reviewed renames that met my needs.). While both of them provided the solution I needed, I felt File Rename Basic was little more cluttered and slower then batch rename was.

In the end I decided to uninstall File Rename Basic; not to say it does not work as needed - just there are better program out there for this kind of work.

"Fails to work in Windows 8 (64 bit)"

    April 27, 2014   |   By XNam360

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

I used File Renamer Basic on my old Windows XP computer and had no problems.

    Cons

I've been trying to use this on my new Windows 8.1 (64bit) computer, but for some reason it can't see any of my files. In every folder, it says I have zero files. I'm not even using any of the file filters (changing the filter doesn't help).

It has no problem seeing and renaming my folders, though, so at least something is working. When I set it to "Rename: Folders," it works fine, but once set to "Rename: Files," it doesn't see any files.

I've sent an email as well as submitted a bug report to the creator Sherrod Computers, but have not gotten any reply. Sherrod Computers's website has a forum where I see a thread under "Bug Reports," in which I see other people complaining about the same problem and I would have liked to get some help there, but they've disabled registering for their forum, so it's as if they don't really care.

    Summary

I'll be looking for a different file renamer.

    Updated on May 19, 2014

    Update:
I found a file renamer that works with my Windows 8 computer. It is called "Bulk File Renamer." It does everything Basic File Renamer did and more. Give it a try.

    Updated on May 19, 2014

Oops, I incorrectly wrote a name of the software I was recommending in my last update. The correct name is "Bulk Rename Utility."

"Was hesitant to download, but it worked perfectly!"

    January 17, 2014   |   By abj5000

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

Works in Windows 8.1 64 bit.
Easy to use and figure out.
    Has a lot of options.
    Previews your changes before committing.
    Files renamed instantly.

    Cons

    None so far.

    Summary

Had about a hundred .jpg files that I wanted to simply add a 0 to the front so they would maintain proper order in a viewer. After downloading it took me about 2 minutes to figure out how to do my simple task. Very useful free app. Recommend.

"It worked after using default directory"

    January 02, 2014   |   By wwweber260

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

It has regular expression file renaming

    Cons

It failed to startup when I installed in a custom directory.

    Summary

This worked like a charm after I installed in the suggested default directory. At first I installed in a directory where I put all my Windows utilities and the program crashed before it even started up. So I uninstalled it and installed in the recommended directory. After that, the program started up fine.

I especially like using regular expressions to rename files and I like how it warned me to "Preview" my changes before committing them. The preview showed that I had a mistake in my regular expression which I quickly corrected. 54 files were renamed successfully. Nice software. Thanks for making this available for free.

"Works in Win 8; Don't See any AdWare"

    December 07, 2013   |   By kirk_b

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

Installed Basic version in Win 8.1 64 bit; no problems with install. Program works with no problems encountered.

    Profiles are useful.

There may be AdWare, but I don't see it, and I've looked. Perhaps if others will give more details.

I haven't seen any nag screens to upgrade yet.

    Cons

I may wish for some additional features, but this program does what it says it will do for free, so I have no true "Cons."

"Does not work with Windows 8"

    November 16, 2013   |   By Sherod_Unresponsive

    Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3

    Pros

This product was a great product prior to Windows 8. I had used it for several years on Windows XP and Windows 7. However, with Windows 8, File Renamer simply refuses to work.

    Cons

Does not work with Windows 8 (64-bit). The publisher, Sherod Computers, is unresponsive to multiple emails requesting support, despite the fact that I had paid for the software.

    Summary

I have tried installing the software (version 6) with and without Administrative privileges, all without success. You will see the splash screen for a second, then error messages appear. Most of the time all you get is a process running in memory. No user interface ever appears. On a rare occasion the UI will appear, but half of the components on the form are missing, making the product totally unusable. Attempting to close the program when this occurs always fails. One must ALT+CTRL+DEL to kill the program. I have tried multiple "Compatibility modes", again, all to no avail. It is sad to see a software publisher let what use to be a decent software program fall into disrepair. I would suggest users to look elsewhere for a file renaming solution.
