CNET Editors' review
A good file renamer can make your life easier, especially if you take a lot of snapshots or have a large and ever-changing music collection. File Renamer Basic from Sherrod Computers is a free tool that can rename, copy, and move your files and folders based on a wide range of properties and options. It can scan thumbnails, filter files by extension, and add prefixes, suffixes, and other elements, including unique parameters. You can preview changes before File Renamer makes them, and Undo them after, if you like.
File Renamer Basic opens with an optional Tool Tip. The user interface is a bit crowded, with lots of functions tucked here and there, but the Office-style Ribbon toolbar helps keep tidy. All the tools and settings you need are grouped together in the main window; for example, the settings for renaming files or folders are grouped with the Copy/Move options at the end of the file entry field (including a Copy To directory that is inactive until needed). File Renamer Basic has an Explorer-style tree view for browsing to and adding files, including subfolders. The bottom half of the interface is where you configure the program's actions. Under File Name Properties, we could edit or exclude Prefix, Filename, Separator, Unique Parameter, Suffix, and Extension. A nice touch: File Renamer Basic displays a sample file name using your selections in a large font in the bottom panel. The Delete/Insert/Remove tab includes settings for both Starting Position and Number of Characters, while the Find/Replace tab offered useful options such as case and extension settings. The Advanced tab lets users create specific file names; it includes a useful tool to search for and insert EXIF keywords. File Renamer Basic also edits ID3 tags and renames lists.
Large buttons labeled Apply, Undo, and Preview make File Renamer Basic very easy to figure out and use, though an extensive Help menu offers plenty of resources, including a full manual and a forum. File Renamer Basic worked fast and well for single files and batches. We liked being able to create and save profiles for regular jobs, too.
Publisher's Description
From Sherrod Computers:
File Renamer Basic is a powerful and yet easy to use program that allows the user to rename files, folders, and MP3 files with ease. It has a filename filter so you can easily narrow down your search to only a specific type of file or filename to work with. You can also remove x number of characters starting from x character and even find and replace text. In addition to its renaming capabilities, it also has a built-in ID3v1 and ID3v2 tag editor.
What's new in this version: Version 6.3 fixed the main issue with the EXIF module.

"It worked for me on my Windows 7 64bit toshiba"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
it's free and works
Cons
may be a little confusing at first.
-
"What a piece of Adware spawning CRAP"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
none - I couldn't install with win 7 64bit - the documentation does not say that.
Cons
Although it wouldn't install File Rename, it did manage to install some vicious adware. Apparently CNET is not in cahoots with the adware infector. How cold they give it FIVE stars. Maybe they get different versions than the general public.
Summary
I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy

"Bought License - Didn't Work - No Response from Support"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
Good product but when I bought the license it wouldn't work.
Cons
Received no support/response from Sherrod Computers. Disappointing.

"Doesn't run in Windows 7 64 Bit"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
None - doesn't run in Windows 64 Bit
Cons
Doesn't launch in Windows 64 Bit. Appears in Task Manager but GUI never loads. Worthless.
-
"Works great, flexible, easy to use, free"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
Can make many variable combinations of changes in every way that I could think of.
Cons
The free version does not accept multiple folders - must work one folder at a time
Summary
Fantatic!
-
"Total crapware."
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
None, wouldn't load with Windows 7.
Cons
Tried repeatedly to install browser crap. Once I cleared that landmine field it installed but wouldn't run. AVOID!

"Very good file renaming tool"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
It does everything a file renamer should do and it does it very easy.
Cons
ADWARE! Be very careful when installing. The install program tricks you into installing some adware such as Incredibar and it will hijack your Internet Explorer and lock up you Internet Options. I had to go to the RESTORE utility in XP and restore to a date prior to installing File Renamer to fix the problem. Once it was fixed, I reinstalled File Renamer being very careful to uncheck the options to install the adware and changing my home page and search engine. This was one big headache.
Summary
I would have given a full five stars to File Renamer had they not had the adware in the install package. I realize the program is free and they need to find some way to finance it but putting a browser hijacker into the install package is not the way to go. A real shame that they did this because the File Renamer itself is an excellent piece of software.
I meant only to give four stars to this review. I would have given five if it did not have the adware in the installer.

"CAUTION - Contains Virus"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
Read my 'Cons' and you will see why I have no 'Pros'
Cons
I just can't understand how this one got through Download's testing, AND got the great Editor's Review. It contains a virus (thank you, Norton, for catching it), and downloads extra software in spite of my unchecking the boxes. It also changed settings, and installed the junky Somoto Tool Bar into Firefox. AND, the Uninstaller program attempts to change more things (again, thanks to Norton)
Summary
Heh, CNET, wake up! You used to catch this kind of stuff in your testing... and certainly wouldn't award this kind of junk 5 stars with your editor's review.

"4 years of use"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
Fast, easy, trial implementation of changes, no apparent problems with large numbers of files or folders.
Cons
folder selection is clunky, but intuitive and functional
Summary
Can't recommend it more if you use a digital camera and have picture storage that isn't your camera's file structure.
-
"Slow, clunky, ugly"
Version: File Renamer Basic 6.3
Pros
Never got that far
Cons
Loads of Crap-Ware hiding in the installer! Proceed with caution!
Even after you uncheck all the boxes, you still get a splash screen for adding a toolbar (and of course make it your default). They make it look like you MUST install the toolbar to get the goodies, but clicking CANCEL at this point allows you to move on to the next screen (which is yet another toolbar!) Cripes!
Actual installation is quick, but the program itself seems very slow. If you have many files, you're going to spend a lot of time waiting for directory scans. After the third directory took more than a minute just to scan, I closed the program.
Looking for something else...Summary
Not the right program for me.
