Editors' review

FastStone Capture addresses the shortcomings common to screen-capture programs, and it packages the features and options you need in an easy-to-use interface that simplifies the most cumbersome tasks, including selecting just the parts you want to save, resizing and editing the image, selecting the file format and destination, writing captions, and naming and organizing the final results.

FastStone Capture's primary interface is a small floating task bar with a handful of easy-to-understand icons that activate the program's various methods of capturing screen images: active window, object, rectangle, freehand, full screen, scrolling window, and, for video capture, a screen recorder. Two other buttons select output options and program settings. The program also installs icons on the desktop and system tray. Clicking on an image in any of the capture modes opens the FastStone Editor, a speedy but basic image editor that has some drawing, painting, and effects capabilities. The ability to quickly and easily write and attach captions may be the standout feature. We also like the screen recorder for capturing onscreen video while preserving the context.

FastStone Capture functions quickly, smoothly, and unobtrusively. It downloads, installs, and opens without issues, and, should you decide not to keep it, it uninstalls cleanly without leaving behind any orphan files or folders. FastStone Capture is shareware; it's free to use for 30 days, after which you must purchase and register your copy. We recommend it for all user levels.

"Works perfectly with FireFox for me"

    February 23, 2014   |   By JohnEastMan

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.7

    Pros

Have been using FastStone Capture for 5+ years and it never failed to make me happy. I use FireFox (default browser 90%), IE (5%) and Chrome(5%). It did a great job capturing web pages for me. The built-in screen recorder helps a lot when I need to show my parents how to use Windows. Everything is included in the $19.95 license. Incredible!!!

    Cons

Still hope it will support tabs in the editor some day.

"The more I use it, the more I love it"

    December 18, 2013   |   By pdmccabe

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.6

    Pros

    Multiple capture methods
    Scrolling page capture
Lots of edit features once something is captured

    Cons

Can only capture one thing (unlike capture software like Greenshot which allows you to capture many things then work on, discard, or save captured images).

Haven't figured out how to use hot keys because they interfere with other program hot keys.

    Summary

I program web surveys, work on web sites, and do a fair amount of graphics related work. Capture is now one of my top five most used programs. It's scrolling feature allows me to capture things that fall outside of the screen (very rare but needed feature in this type of program). It has a free-form capture ability that saves me a lot of editing time, it works VERY well, it's intuitive, and I just can't say enough good things about it. I rarely rate software and I love getting free software but this software is only free to try and costs $20 - so be mindful of that. It's the best screenshot program out there in my book (and I'm a very heavy user). If you need nice but only OK software, try Greenshot - which is free - and FAR better than using the Windows PrtScr screen shot feature.

"Does everything I want it for."

    December 07, 2013   |   By howardferns

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.6

    Pros

A screen capture with editor that does everything I want (capture region, annotate with arrows, lines, shapes or text with choice of size, colour, font, etc.) with no superfluous features that I don't want, and no annoyances. Opening the program puts a floating toolbar on the screen, you can position it where you want. On this if I select Region there is immediately a hair cross on my screen that I can drag about to make my selection. On completion of the capture, it opens immediately on the Editor. When you are finished there is no tray icon to close, you simply close the floating toolbar.

    Cons

I can not fault it other than the fact that it is now payware. If you do a search you will find the last free version, which is what I am using.

    Summary

Highly recommended. In my search for the best program for my needs I looked at and tried a number of similar ones. Discarding the ones with no editors or the ones that link to an external editor, many of the built in editors are too limited in options, while some are too complex. Then there are a few that require .Net Framework 4 which I refuse to install because, I once found, it slows my computer down dreadfully. I am so glad I turned to FastStone Capture as it is absolutely perfect for me.

    Cons

    Summary

Great screen capture program. Make it available for Linux.

    "Works equally well in FireFox"

    August 05, 2013   |   By JohnEastMan

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.6

    Pros

I have tried many, but this is the one that actually works in all popular browsers including FireFox. The screen video recorder is another great addition that produces good quality video in very small file size. Super tool for me.

    Cons

Still waiting for tab support in the editor.

    "Still screwed-up"

    August 04, 2013   |   By dangnad1

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.6

    Pros

Works very well with Opera and IE

    Cons

Despite FastStone's best efforts they have NEVER solved the problem of frame capture in Firefox. Still screwed up in Firefox.

    Summary

Prior to version 7.0 FastStone Capture was the ultimate capture program performing flawlessly in all situations. Then at some point before version 7.5 either a new release of Mozilla Firefox happened or some other unexplaiable thing occurred and FSC stopped working. Well...they worked on it and finally brought out v7.5. It solved many problems buy, alas, it didn't fix the FF problem. I know, I paid them for the 7.5 mess. Well, I download version 7.6....SAME PROBLEM.

Why is it that software producers (Microsoft included) get on the update bandwagon to produce meaningless changes in their programs (so-called "updates") yet ignore longstanding errors in their programs. FastStone is no different. They have a GIGANTIC glitch in Capture yet they make a few cosmetic changes and give it a new update number.

My advied: If you've never used FSC, don't start now.

    "Minimal, yet wonderful!"

    May 17, 2013   |   By designjam

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.4

    Pros

    1) The one thing I like most about FastStone Capture is its minimal control window. All the options I need are nicely tucked away at a corner of the screen.
    2) All standard options I guess, taking snaps of regions, windows, objects, but I rank it high on usability.
    3) Capture of scrollable windows is impeccable, works like a charm for me!

    Cons

Screen recording in video seems only to be in wmv.

    Summary

    I recommend!

    "OMG love it!!"

    April 23, 2013   |   By sallysbakerie

    Version: FastStone Capture 7.4

    Pros

Does everything a fancy editor does but without the extra fluff, well basically if you just want to capture screenshots and annotate and stuff it's a godsend! I was pleasantly surprised you can also edit pictures and cut/paste elements into it very easily. Stable no issues.

    Cons

It's just hard to remember shortcuts like how to take a scrolling screenshot but it's totally livable
