Publisher's Description
From NCH Software:
Express Scribe is professional audio player software for PC designed to assist the transcription of audio recordings. Audio recording can be loaded automatically from email, LAN, FTP, local hard drive, and Express Delegate. A typist can install Express Scribe on their computer and control audio playback with a foot pedal (keeping your hands free for typing), or keyboard shortcuts with Scribe running in the background while transcribing into a word-processor or other program. The free version of Express Scribe supports most common audio formats including WAV, MP3, WMA, AIF, and DCT and does not expire. You will need the professional version for playing proprietary formats including DSS, DS2, MVF and video file transcription.

"Do NOT use Express Scribe, Rubbish"
Version: Express Scribe 5.24
Pros
Lots of other software can be used to replace it.
Cons
These are the reasons that you should NOT choose Express Scribe:
1. It may crash your computer if you are using Windows 7 or higher version;
2. There is absolutely NO refund if you purchase it;
3. No tech support at all, except that you pay for extra cost when purchasing, this is ridiculous, it means NO support at all even if you have a small installation question. Why not choose other product?
4. Even after you un-check any non related item, after you do a clean down load, there will be tons of useless trash program or software download to your computer, they will harm or crash your computer;
5. It will still crash your computer, even you think you remove all of those trash. It will not crash right away, but in a couple of days, so you will not be sure why. Very dangerous!!!Summary
DO NOT USE IT, EXCEPT YOU WANT TROUBLE !!!

"Waste of time"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
Easy to use
Cons
After initial trial period was over I uninstalled program then reinstalled- NO LUCK (even after it says after uninstalling to go back and download any time to use again) After repeatedly doing this and getting no where, I gave up. Pissed off for wasting my time I signed up with Cnet especially to post this message. Don't use Express Scribe.
Summary
Useless garbage

"NO FREE PRODUCT SUPPORT BEYOND 3 MOS. OF PURCHASE"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
Easy to use user interface with customizable hot keys.
Cons
Buggy
ExpensiveSummary
NCH Software should have the decency toe explicitly state in bold letters on their upgrade page itself (not in the terms and conditions) that upgrading to PRO does NOT mean you get subsequent fixes for free. They know their products have a lot of bugs and have capitalized on this appallingly. It's like you have to pay $30 every three months to get the best possible version of a product that still is a work in progress.

"Waste of time."
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
Efficient design
Cons
Just about everything, takes forever to load dictations, playback is distorted usually, keep having to uninstall and reinstall every time I try to use it
Summary
This program is obnoxious. As a student taking a course that requires this program, I am incredibly annoyed by it. I ran the course on WIN 7 and had to re-install the program at least once a month due to it not connecting with my foot pedal on the "free" version. Now, running on WIN 8, I have had to uninstall and re-install the program 4 times in the last 2 weeks because either it tells me the "trial" period has ended within a 4-5 day period or my foot pedal no longer works with the program. If a program is being offered to a student, the least you could do is use a program that works and doesn't have to be uninstalled and re-installed constantly. I have spent more time trying to get this program to work, than I have actually using it. When the "Background noise" is softened, it often times distorts the playback of the speaking person. Often times my dictations take as long as 45 minutes to load to the program and this is just the beginning.

"Misrepresented"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
Was a good product.
Cons
I have been using this product for years. I had to install it on a new computer running Windows 8. The free version has taken away the foot pedal control option, forcing you to pay for the Pro Version. Nope. I'll be using another program. Now I'm in an uninstall loop nightmare. Can't access the program to uninstall because my trial period has expired.
Summary
Not worth it anymore.

"Works but is scamware"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
It does the job adequately. It works with my Infinity footswitch which is why I bought it.
Cons
Litters your computer with links to unnecessary and unwanted software. Hijacks your file associations to send you out to that software.
Once you have bought your version, that's it. Hit a bug that they have fixed in a later version the day after you paid up? Too bad. Buy again buddy.Summary
As much as anything, it is this company's sharp practice that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
Looking at the other reviews it seems that I am not alone.
Look around for something that is not from a bunch of shysters.
I am happy to pay for software that I find useful, but I have yet to buy from a company with tactics as dodgy as this one.
This is a pity because the software works reasionably well. It has a dated but functional look and feel. -
"Express Scribe Pro - No Good"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
easy installation
Cons
Recording plays back so muddled that it's useless. I had to go back to listening to it on the digital recorder. Such a disappointment.
Summary
Don't buy this. Shop around as much as you can first.

"Used to be the best, now it's rubbish"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
If you can get it to work, it's a good program.
Cons
I used Express Scribe for many years with no problems. Used to be a brilliant program for transcriptionists. Now it's rubbish. I paid for a licence and have had nothing but trouble since. It hangs, takes up to 6 or 7 goes to start up. Can't even uninstall properly because it hangs. Tech support is insulting: "have you tried turning your computer on and off again" - ***?! I've sent screenshots and detailed emails about the issues, with no support.
"Crippleware" is a term I've not heard before but it describes Express Scribe perfectly! I can't even reactivate my licence on the latest version.
I'll be looking for an alterative immediately. Time is money and being self-employed, wasting an hour or more a day trying to get this once excellent program to even load is an absolute joke.
I don't know what NCH did to Express Scribe but it's crap now. What a shame. Why did they do this? Baffling.Summary
Once the best thing on the market for transcriptionists, now it's a nightmare.

"Crippleware. NOT FREE. Serious potential for data loss."
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
Easier to understand than most of the alternatives.
Lots of sound enhancement features (all of the noise/volume correction features can be duplicated and even improved upon in real-time with a dedicated high-end sound card, FYI)Cons
Randomly and frequently cuts off ends of audio files by as much as five minutes. There is no indication of any problem within the program, so you must examine each file in an independent media player to be certain you don't miss important information.
Dropped free support for most foot pedals.
Dropped free support for a number of common file types.
Free version requires a special hidden setup/uninstall method to convert from crippled Pro trial version.
Free version is still crippled, and frequently reminds you to buy the pro version.
Installs additional NCS trialware packages without clear warning; these must be uninstalled manually.Summary
ExpressScribe was once a wonderful program with a great future. NCS have transformed this into a nasty little piece of crippleware with at least one major bug. Randomly cutting off as much as five minutes of transcription data without notice is an unacceptable defect, and it defeats the purpose of this program.
Suggest "Transcriptionsoftware f4" as a free alternative. Very basic but it works properly. Free version has a 10-minute per-file limit, enough time for most notes, voicemails, and referrals. -
"Only Free for 14 Days, False Advertising by NCH"
Version: Express Scribe 5.55
Pros
No pros worth being lied to.
Cons
This company does not say anywhere that this is a 14 day trial, they advertise it as a Free version, then hit you up 14 days later to buy it. Very bad business practice in my opinion. CNet should be better at this when reviewing a product, they need to do better follow up.
