    "Demo version is useless"

    October 12, 2010   |   By lodurr

Version: Entourage Email Archive X 4.2.0

    Pros

Can't tell as demo version doesn't let you actually use the software.

    Cons

Demo does not permit an actual archive operation (undocumented feature); also, the demo limitations make it impossible to test key features.

    Summary

Based on evaluations by other people, this software appears to be the only thing that does what it does (archive Entourage messages). However, the restrictons on the demo are so severe that it is literally impossible to evaluate the software -- so claims of a "free trial version" are essentially dishonest.

"Vendor Forces Microsoft Office Update for EEA..."

I purchased EEAX but don't use it because I have Microsoft Office 2004 with no plans to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2008. Many desirable and needed features in EEAX are not available to me because this developer makes those features available only to customers who upgrade to Microsoft 2008. I have written several times about this but not one time did the vendor offer my money back, explain why the improvements are not available to registered users running Office 2004, or come across as the least bit concerned about being fair!

I did pay for EEAX to be ripped off by an arrogant want to be dictator!

    "I can't stop loving EEAX"

Version: Entourage Email Archive X 4.2.0

    Summary

EEAX is the best solution for archiving your email from within Microsoft Entourage, and using the FileMaker Pro Template makes it a breeze! I have been able, with Softhing help on Skype, to consolidate 9 years of email archives into one FMP database which allows searching one email out of 30,000, including attachment, in less than five seconds. I cannot think of a better way to archive your entourage emails and have not experienced before such a level of professional support. Congratulations Softhing!

"EEAX: Superb application with great support."

Version: Entourage Email Archive X 3.6.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Entourage Email Archive X is a superb application for archiving my email - fast and efficient. Initially I ran into one issue due to the method I used in archiving my email backups that prevented EEAX from operating properly. Softhing support immediately to assist and provided precise guidance rectifying the problem.

I would require some additional features to round it out, and make it indispensable to me, but it's a great utility for archiving Entourage databases.

I was having problems with the app. *All user-error... DOH! The developer made all efforts to contact me. AND... using iChat, manually demonstrated every part of the app. He even gave me tips on how to best use the app.

    Definitely worth the price!

"Great for Archiving Gobs of Entourage Emails"

    June 11, 2008   |   By Dean Wermer

Version: Entourage Email Archive X 4.0.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As a lawyer with thousands of emails each month that I need to archive (with their attachments) on a regular basis, I've used this product for several years. The latest version is the best yet - works great and quickly for me. The results can be imported into a database for enhanced searching (I use devonthink pro), if you want more detail than spotlight provides. It's also dead simple to drag emails back to entourage if you want to restore a message.

Over the years, I've had a few questions, and the softhing guys and gals have responded very quickly and pleasantly. All-in-all I've been extremely satisfied.

    "Great Program - Amazing Support"

    April 14, 2008   |   By rdfowlkes

Version: Entourage Email Archive X 3.6.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is an excellent program that will allow you to reduce the size of your bloated Entourage email database. In my experience it works flawlessly. Using the FileMaker Pro template I am able to much more thoroughly search my archived database and it allows me to drag and drop those archived emails, with attachments, back into Entourage easily if I need them there again. I can archive several different mails boxes to different archive databases or to the same archive database. I found the manual straightforward but it did not answer many of my â??what ifâ?? questions or totally explain the advantages or disadvantages of some of the choices. And although I watched the video several times I did not fully understand it or the importance of it. In hindsight it shows you exactly what to do. However tech-support is the best I have ever encountered in 19 years of dealing with computer software support. They responded within a reasonable amount of time to my email and when my questions got complicated they setup a chat with me and hung in there until I was totally comfortable.

"Excellent email utility for Entourage on Exchange..."

    August 28, 2007   |   By gmccurdy8_dotmac

Version: Entourage Email Archive X 3.5.0

    Summary

    ...accounts
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I venture to say that email represents at least 85% of my contacts with coworkers and business-related outsiders. In the course of a year, I chalk up nearly 20,000 email messages (including the copies of those that I send to others). Some are of very low historical value (e.g., "There will be a meeting of the xyz committee today in the library at 10 a.m.") and probably do not need to be retained beyond the moment. But I have adopted the practice of not deleting even those emails before the announced event, because I may need to refresh my memory on which meetings are coming up next, and where. By the time I return to my desk after the gathering, I have things to do, places to go, and people to write. I don't take the time to sift through the accumulated emails and delete those that really do not have any known value for the future. Besides, the vast majority of them do need to be retained, as they contain questions, answers, policies, decisions, and advice that guide what this company does. And sometimes even the meeting announcement messages turn into threads with meat in them.

This chews up a lot of space on the office's Exchange server. Our IT person stares at me with that "You gotta be kidding me" look when I tell her I really do not want to permanently delete that valuable history. Until now, I have not found software that can retrieve all of the messages in my various Exchange mailboxes and allow me to store it in an easily searchable archive.

That brings me to Entourage Email Archive X 3.5.0, an answer to prayer, by Softhing. I have a MacPro, running OS 10.4.9 (one of two in the office, as the rest of the folks have machines running Windows XP). My email client is Microsoft Entourage 2004. (Microsoft discontinued Outlook 2001 for Macintosh, which ran under Classic only, and makes no other email application for OS 10.) The manual says that EEAX 3.5.0 requires Mac OS Tiger (10.4.x) and Microsoft Entourage 2004. "Previous versions of EEAX compatible with Panther/Entourage X is available to [sic] our web site."

EEAX 3.5.0 is a wonderful program that pulled all of my email into a tab-separated text file, which I then imported into a Filemaker Pro template provided by Softhing. I happen to have Filemaker Pro 9.0; templates are provided for earlier versions of Filemaker Pro back to the .fp5 series, which included Filemaker Pro 5.x and 6.x. I did not try the the .fp5 template, but the .fp7 one worked flawlessly.

EEAX also allows you to save the archive in Archive folders or as straight text (presumably without tabs). Those can be searched by Spotlight or other text search utilities. So you do not need to store it in Filemaker Pro (which would require that you have the Filemaker Pro application, of course). As a tab-separated text file, one could store it in any database product that can import such files, if something more sophisticated than a text search utility is desired.

The procedure was very simple. I just followed the reasonably short and very clear manual, step by step. The one part I hiccoughed on was where it told me how to select where I wanted to store the output file (the archive or text or tab-separated text file). The instruction says, "Pressing the button Set Output Path you can choose the destination ...." The button is actually an icon of a folder right below the Save: line. The words "Set Output Path" were next to the folder icon, but they were grayed out. It took me a few moments to realize that I should click the folder icon. Once I did, it gave me the usual dialog for choosing a folder (or creating a new folder) where the archive or text file was to be saved. Then the path showed up next to it in black letters, replacing the grayed-out words. Softhing may make that folder icon/button a little more obvious in a future release. After all, they do have to accommodate dummies like me, not just those who see nothing arcane in all this technical wizardry.

Other than that, it was just a matter of reading the guide. I got to choose which folders on Exchange I wanted to archive. (I omitted only those that had no mail in them.) I also had the option to retrieve and store attachments, which I did.

There are other options as well, but I did not experiment with them. Instead of saving the text file in the Mac OS Roman character set, I could have saved it in Unicode UTF-8 or Unicode UTF-16BE, whatever that means. (Did I mention we're talking about a dummy here?) And EEAX retrieves mail from POP accounts as well (so I could have retrieved whatever email I might have had that resides locally on my own computer in Entourage's mail database). There were choices on what parts of the email I wanted EEAX to extract (e.g., internet headers, or not; attachments, or not; the message in its original Entourage format (.eml) in addition to the archive or text file, or not).

It took around 90 minutes for EEAX to do its work. In the meantime, I was able to continue to use my computer in all programs. I was actually able to send and receive email in Entourage, too. I assume that I may not have captured the most recent email that might have come or been sent after EEAX did its thing on the Inbox or Sent Mail folders, but that was a risk I was willing to take, in favor of not interrupting the vital communication system. The import into Filemaker took just a few minutes for the 19,909 email records.

I'm very pleased with Entourage Email Archive X 3.5. Even aside from allowing me to earn the good graces of our IT person once I let her gleefully delete old mail from the Exchange server, I now have a Filemaker Pro file that I can search so quickly (and with many different criteria at once, such as between specified dates AND from specified individuals only AND with certain words in the body). And it is the first Macintosh product I found that can retrieve the mail from the Exchange server.

    Thank you, Softhing!
