E-Icons lets you customize the shell icons on your system easily and quickly. You can change any of the standard Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP icons for the desktop, Start menu, drives, folders, and files. It also lets you use icon themes so you can change all icons at once or create your own themes, and it gives you the opportunity to assign an icon to any folder, any drive, and any registered file type.

This compact tool saves you time and clicks when creating icons, but its limited features keep a lid on creativity. E-Icons includes a decent set of icon themes, and allows you to quickly manipulate the look and feel of icons for different file types, folders, drives, and desktop elements. We especially like the Altered Icons option, which puts a little spring in an icon, making it look as it's jumping off the screen. While all the functions available in E-Icons also are available in Windows, the program's benefit is it offers plenty of shortcuts and handy tricks to make the process shorter and smoother. If desired, you can view all your icon changes at once, or save preferences for a particular icon theme. The main drawback of E-Icon is it can't create icons from images, but only extract them from executables or icon libraries. Overall, this is a useful tool for folks looking to change the look and feel of their Windows screen, rather than do a whole-scale redesign.

  "TROUBLESOME & INEFFECTIVE"

  Summary: I kept having to do everything over & over. The new icons would not hold. Certainly not worth paying for.

  "Gets the job done"

  Summary: It works well, it will change pretty much any icon you want, even folders for a certain directory. Only gripe is that it has crashed on me a couple of times.

  "Good but not perfect"

  Pros: Does everything it says, assigns any icon to any folder or file type

  Cons: Doesn't have editing capabilities

  Summary: Good basic program, works OK but nothing spectacular
