Publisher's description
From Tarn Adams :Welcome to Dwarf Fortress. Prepare to guide your stout charges to fortune in a world fraught with many perils. You'll begin by creating your world and watching an animation of the region's history. Once this process is completed, you can prepare a group of dwarves and send them out to seek wealth deep in the mountains. As you dig deeper and more dwarves take up residence in your outpost, your doings will attract attention, both wanted and unwanted. Deal with challenges as they arise, and you might one day find that your fortress has grown to become the capital of the kingdom.
Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning over 1000 years of detailed history, dozens of towns, hundreds of caves and regions with various wildlife. The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes. Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain. Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness and the depths. Support the nobility as they make demands of your populace. Keep your dwarves happy and read their thoughts as they work and relax. Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance. Meet adversaries from previous games. Recruit people in towns to come with you on your journey. Explore without cumbersome plot restrictions. Seamlessly wander the world -- up to 197376 x 197376 squares total--or travel more rapidly on the region map. Accept quests from the town and civilization leaders. Retire and meet your old characters. Bring them along on an adventure with a new character or reactivate them and play directly. What's new in this version:

Version: Dwarf Fortress 0.28.181.40c
"Seriously amazing and worth the effort"
Pros: -Most complex game I've ever played
-Endless amounts of things you can do
-Great unpredictability to keep things fresh
-Can play for HOURS and HOURSCons: -Steep learning curb, but worth it.
-Can slow down in late stages of gameSummary: Easily the most complex and deepest game I've ever played. ASCII graphics can easily be changed to one of many tilesets that vastly improve the game's graphics. I almost deleted the game once I saw the ASCII, but I waited to get a tileset and trie... read more >>

"Steep learning curve, ASCII graphics, astonishing depth"
Pros: Amazing complexity. See Bottom-line summary.
Demands imagination. The low graphics practically require active imagination of dwarven lifestyles, activities, and combat.
Customization. With a bit of research, you can modify almost anything.Cons: Learning curve like a cliff face. This game takes quite some time to get used to, especially without a complex instruction novel.
ASCII interface. The lack of graphics will turn many people away.
Tantrum spirals. Most common method of fortress doomSummary: Keep in mind that this is an Alpha release. This project has been in development since 2002 by a single person, and was purely 2D as recently as 2007.
This game is a giant sandbox, with the tools necessary to create absolutely magnificent... read more >> -

"Try eh? do yourself a favor."
Pros: God. I wouldn't know where to begin.
brilliant
insanely clever

I made a freaking trap that drops magma onto enemies and encases them in cooling rock for god's sake!Cons: hard to get into and to understand but by god once you do you are hooked.
Summary: don't fool yourself into monotony by being only willing to try big name titles like Ubisoft's "fetch quest 12" or Bungiees "repetitive boring shootout 3." at least try the game before condemning it and then when you hit the problem that you can't un... read more >>
